Examine our heart and clean away any bitterness, pride, or resentment

Disciple of Prayer
Bread of Heaven/ Word of Life/ Jesus is the word of God Proverbs 20:20 If someone curses their father or mother, their lamp will be snuffed out in pitch darkness. Prayer Inspired by Proverbs 20:20: Our prayer: Heavenly Father, Thank You for Your word and for the wisdom You give to guide our daily steps. LORD God, we come before You with a humble heart. Forgive us for any time we have dishonored, disrespected, or spoken hastily against our parents or those who raised us. Examine our heart and clean away any bitterness, pride, or resentment. Help us to honor them as You have commanded, so that our life may walk in Your light rather than stumble in darkness. Keep our lamp burning bright with Your truth, wisdom, and grace. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

Treatment of Parents
A foolish child breaks a parent’s heart so honor them with gratitude and obedience.
We join you in this humble and beautiful prayer and we say amen to your desire for a clean heart before the Lord. We are moved by your willingness to ask God to examine you and to clean away bitterness, pride and resentment, for this is the posture God honors.

The word you have lifted up is solemn and true, Proverbs 20:20 says Whoever curses his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in blackness of darkness. This shows us how seriously God views honor within the family. This command is not a suggestion but is rooted in the fifth commandment, Exodus 20:12 says Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you, which is repeated in Ephesians 6:2-3 as the first commandment with a promise, that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth. To honor does not mean we pretend that hurt did not happen or that we approve of what was wrong, but it means we choose with God's help to speak without cursing, to release contempt, and to show respect for the position God gave them as our parents.

We also hear your cry for God to examine your heart, and that is a biblical prayer. Psalm 139:23-24 says Search me, God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way. And Psalm 51:10 says Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me. God is faithful to answer this prayer because He desires truth in the inward parts and He is the one who can wash us and make us clean.

You rightly named bitterness, pride and resentment, for these are roots that will defile us if we let them remain. Hebrews 12:15 warns us to look carefully lest there be any man who falls short of the grace of God, lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and many be defiled by it. Ephesians 4:31-32 tells us Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. Pride too is dangerous, for Proverbs 16:18 says Pride goes before destruction, and an arrogant spirit before a fall. To ask God to remove these things is to ask for freedom.

We rejoice that you call on Jesus as the Bread of Heaven, the Word of Life, the Word of God. This is who He is. John 1:1 says In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And Jesus said in John 6:35 I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will not be hungry, and he who believes in me will never thirst. It is only through Him that we have access to the Father and it is His truth and grace that keeps our lamp burning bright.

So we pray together with you. Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your Word which is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. We come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and ask You to search us and know us. Forgive us for every dishonoring word, thought or attitude we have held toward our father and mother or toward those who raised us, whether spoken in haste, in anger or in silent resentment. Wash us with the blood of Jesus and cleanse our hearts. Remove all bitterness, pride and resentment and replace them with humility, tenderheartedness and forgiveness, just as You in Christ have forgiven us. Help us to honor our parents as You have commanded, to speak with grace and truth, and to walk in Your light and not stumble in darkness. Keep our lamp burning bright by Your Holy Spirit, nourish us daily with Jesus the Bread of Life, and renew a right spirit within us. Lead us in the everlasting way. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Thank you for sharing this humble prayer with us. We hear your desire to walk in the light and to have anything bitter or proud gently cleared from your heart, especially in how you honor your parents.

That willingness to invite God to search you is itself a tender step. When hurt with parents goes unaddressed, disappointment and anger can settle into resentment that quietly colors how we see life, and it often weighs most heavily on the one carrying it. Pride can also make it harder to see our own need for grace and to receive it.

One insight that helps many is that forgiveness often has two parts. There is a clear decision to release the debt and not hold on to getting even, and then there is the slower work where our emotions gradually catch up to that decision as we keep bringing the hurt to God. It is normal for that second part to take time, especially when old memories resurface.

It may help to set aside a few quiet minutes this week to be specific with the Lord about one hurt or expectation that still stings, tell Him you choose to release it into His hands, and ask Him to keep softening your heart day by day. Walking this out with a trusted pastor or mature believer can also give you steady encouragement and prayer.

Father, we thank You for this heart that wants to be clean before You. Search what is hidden, lift what is heavy, and gently renew what needs healing. Teach our friend to walk in humility and grace and keep their lamp burning bright in Your care. In Jesus' name, Amen.

It is a good and searching prayer you have offered, and one which the Lord delights to answer, for you ask Him to do what only He can do, to examine the heart and to cleanse it within.

The word you have quoted is solemn, If someone curses their father or mother, their lamp will be snuffed out in pitch darkness. To dishonor those whom God has placed over us is not a light thing, for the command to honor father and mother is the first commandment with promise, and to despise it is to walk toward darkness. Yet how needful is your confession, for which of us has not in thought, in hasty speech, or in settled pride, failed in this duty. Some were blessed with pious parents and yet turned aside, and that very privilege makes the sin appear the greater. To feel this is itself a mercy, for it shows the Spirit is at work to make you tender and penitent.

Hear then the blessed whisper which meets every trembling heart that desires forgiveness, There is forgiveness with Thee. This is not a forgiveness which you must find out or earn, but a divine forgiveness, I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions. It is surprising forgiveness, so free and full that God Himself speaks as one who glories in it, and it is complete forgiveness. When you come to your creditor and say I have nothing to pay, He does not forgive a part, but the whole debt is nailed to the cross. He not only forgave at the first, but He continues daily to forgive, and His forgiveness is eternal. Whatever your age or history, however hasty your words or deep your resentment has been, there is forgiveness with God through Jesus Christ His Son, the Just dying for the unjust to bring us to God. There is forgiveness now, at this moment, for every repenting and believing sinner who looks to Christ alone, for salvation is through Jesus Christ alone and in no other.

You ask also that bitterness, pride and resentment may be taken away, and here is the power of the cross. When we truly mourn for Him whom we have pierced, and feel the bitterness of our sin against Christ, that holy bitterness makes Christ very sweet and it takes away all bitterness against our fellow men. The soul that has said, how much I offended God, and yet He has forgiven me, cannot hold fast to resentment. It must become sweet, gentle, kind, tender and forgiving toward others. Even as Christ forgave you, so also do you. This is the pattern set before us, and it is gloriously ennobling, for revenge is paltry but forgiveness is great minded. If you have received so much manifest forgiveness, to forgive ought to become as natural as to open your hands.

Therefore let us pray together that your lamp may be kept burning bright, not by your own strength, but by His truth, wisdom and grace.

Heavenly Father, we thank Thee for Thy word which is a lamp unto our feet, and for Jesus Christ the living Word, the Bread of Heaven. We confess before Thee that we have not always honored our father and mother as Thou hast commanded, but have sinned in thought, word and deed, in pride and hastiness of spirit. Forgive us, O Lord, for Jesus sake, and blot out our transgressions. Examine our hearts and cleanse away every root of bitterness, pride and resentment. Create in us a clean heart and renew a right spirit within us. Teach us to honor those Thou hast given us, and to walk in Thy light rather than stumble in darkness. Keep our lamp burning with Thy truth, and make us to be forgiving as we have been forgiven, to Thy glory. In the name of Jesus Christ our only hope and Redeemer we pray, Amen.
