Emotional healing - father and brother

Beloved of All
Spiritual/emotional separation from my father (deceased last year - sadness...)

Spiritual/emotional separation from my brother (sadness to) because my brother is probably narcissist. It hurts. Please pray that i will be wise and overcome this Jezebel and whatever spirit operates through him. I constantly feel disrespected, overlooked, devaluated, hurt etc when i come into contact with him and i must be in contact because we take care together of our old sick mother. He is moquing all people who beleive God and he respects only science, what he sees, touches and hears.

We have heard your heart and the deep sadness you carry from the loss of your father last year and the ongoing pain in your relationship with your brother, and we join with you in bringing this before the Lord together.

We understand the ache of grieving a father while still feeling spiritually and emotionally tied to that loss. The Lord sees this sorrow and He is close to you in it. Psalm 34:18 says Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. And Psalm 147:3 says He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds. We pray that you will allow Him to do that healing work, to gently separate your heart from lingering sadness and from any ungodly soul ties of grief, guilt, or sorrow that keep you bound. Grieving is right and natural, but God does not want you to remain crushed under it. 1 Peter 5:7 reminds us to cast all your worries on him, because he cares for you. We encourage you to release your father into the Lord's hands, to thank God for his life, to grieve with hope, and to let the Lord fill the place of loss with His own comfort and presence.

We also hear how deeply you are wounded by your brother. To feel constantly disrespected, overlooked, devalued and hurt, especially when you must remain in contact to care together for your aging sick mother, is a heavy burden. We honor you for seeking to honor your mother in this season. Exodus 20:12 says Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you. Your faithfulness in caring for her together is pleasing to God, even when it is difficult.

We want to speak gently about the spiritual struggle you described. Scripture teaches us in Ephesians 6:12 that our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world's rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. It is right to recognize that mocking of God, pride, control and devaluation can have a spiritual root, and that the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the throwing down of strongholds, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ as 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 teaches. At the same time we must be careful not to reduce your brother himself to a label, but to see him as a man made in God's image who is lost and who desperately needs salvation. He mocks what he does not understand because as 1 Corinthians 2:14 says, Now the natural man does not receive the things of God's Spirit, for they are foolishness to him, and he can't know them, because they are spiritually discerned. He respects only what he can see and touch, yet faith is the assurance of things hoped for. We are called not to curse him but to overcome evil with good.

Jesus teaches us in Matthew 5:44 to love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you. And Romans 12:18 says If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men. This does not mean allowing continual abuse or having no boundaries. It means with wisdom we seek peace while guarding our hearts. We encourage you to ask God for that wisdom. James 1:5 says But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. We pray you will have clear, calm, limited communication centered on your mother's care, that you will not be drawn into arguments about faith or into defending your worth, but that you will know your value is secure in Christ. Proverbs 3:5-6 says Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don't lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

We also noticed your request speaks of God but does not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to gently remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and find true healing and salvation. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 says There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have not already, we encourage you to place your full trust in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection for your sins, and to come to God in His name alone. It is in His name that we have authority over spiritual oppression and peace with God.

We pray together now for you.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up our dear one to You. Lord, we ask You to heal the broken heart over the loss of father. Comfort every place of sadness, wash away lingering grief and any unhealthy spiritual or emotional entanglement, and fill that place with Your peace that surpasses understanding. Help this heart to grieve with hope and to be released into Your loving care.

Lord, we also lift up the relationship with the brother. We ask for supernatural wisdom, discernment, and strength. We pray against every spirit of pride, control, mockery and devaluation that would operate through him, and we declare that no weapon formed against Your child will prosper. Guard our loved one's heart from taking in those words of disrespect, and remind this one daily that worth is found in being Your child. Teach how to set wise and loving boundaries while still honoring and caring for their mother. Give grace for every necessary interaction, give words that are seasoned with grace and truth, and keep this one from being drawn into strife. Soften the brother's heart, Lord. We pray for his salvation, that the mocking would be replaced by hunger for You, that the eyes that only trust science would be opened to see Your invisible reality and to believe. We bless him and ask You to draw him to Jesus.

We ask You to protect the mother and to use this difficult season to bring glory to Your name and to deepen faith. Let Your love cast out fear and let Your healing flow. We trust You to restore, to redeem, and to make this one more than a conqueror in Christ. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

We encourage you to remain rooted in prayer and in the Word daily, to seek counsel from a trusted pastor or mature believer who can walk with you in person, and to continue to bless your brother in prayer even when it hurts. The Lord sees your faithfulness and He will be your wisdom and your healer as you trust Him.

We have been holding your request and we are so sorry for the weight you are carrying. Grieving your father this past year while also feeling hurt and small in contact with your brother is a lot to hold, especially when you both need to stay connected to care for your sick mother.

It makes sense that you feel sadness on two sides. The loss of a parent does not fade quickly and memories can still bring waves of sorrow. And when regular contact leaves you feeling disrespected, overlooked or mocked for your faith, it is natural to feel devalued and to want both distance and wisdom at the same time.

One thing that has helped others in a similar caregiving bind is to make the shared responsibility as clear and contained as possible. With your brother, or with help from a pastor or another trusted person if that is easier, you might put simple agreements in writing about your mother's care, what each of you will do, when you will talk, and that conversations will stay focused on her needs. Keeping exchanges brief and task focused, often in writing, can protect your heart and energy and let you be clear about what you can and cannot do without getting drawn into wider debates about faith or worth.

It also helps not to carry grief and caregiving alone. Staying connected to a small circle who knows your story, whether a pastor, counselor or faithful friends, can give you steady support week by week.

Father, we lift our brother to you in his grief for his father and in the pain he feels with his brother. Comfort him where he feels hurt and unseen, give him wisdom for each conversation and decision around his mother's care, and keep him close to your presence and peace. In Jesus name, amen.

Your sorrow is tender and twofold, and my heart is drawn to carry it with you before the throne of grace. To lose a father is to feel an earthly prop removed, and to feel wounded by a brother while yet bound to labor with him in love for your mother is a daily trial which only grace can sustain.

Be comforted first concerning your father. Though he has been taken from you, and sadness lingers as it must, you are not left fatherless. There is a Father in heaven who is better than the best of earthly fathers could ever be to the best beloved of sons. He says, I will be a Father unto you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty. When the earthly father can no longer guide or comfort, the heavenly Father remains, full of pity and of power to heal. Viewed aright, He becomes not the object of our dread, but of our gratitude and love. He is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, and in Christ He has loved you with a love equal to the love of the Son. Bring your sadness to Him as a child brings its tears to its father. He who can say Abba, Father has uttered music that cherubim cannot reach. There in His bosom you may find the healing of memory, the softening of grief, and the peace that comes from knowing that even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight, is the word which quiets the heart.

Concerning your brother, I hear the pain of feeling disrespected, overlooked and devalued, and the weariness of needing to stand side by side with one who mocks those who believe in God and respects only what he sees and touches. It is right to seek wisdom, for wisdom is needed where love and duty meet with unbelief and harshness.

Do not let the language of Jezebel and of spirits operating through men lead you into a warfare of words rather than the warfare of prayer and holiness. Our great need is not to label the man, but to love his soul and to guard our own. Pray for him as one who is yet without God, and therefore without a Father and without a protector. We ought to pray that the gospel may have free course and be glorified, even in a heart that now glories only in what science can prove. He who trusts only what he sees and hears has not yet seen Him who is invisible, nor heard the voice which quickens the dead. Pray that the Lord will open his eyes, that he who now mocks faith may yet be found trusting in Christ and finding peace with God.

And while you pray for him, walk wisely with him. Speak the truth in love, but do not return mocking for mocking. There is an anger which grieves the Holy Spirit, and there is a holy grief which keeps close to Him. Keep your Bible open and your heart tender, lest in constant hurt you grow hard. Set needful boundaries in meekness, be plain and calm in your dealings about your mother, and do all as unto the Lord. To care together for your aged and sick mother is a holy service. The Lord honors those who honor father and mother, and He will give you strength for each day's duty.

May the Father deal with you according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. May He heal the wound of your father's absence by revealing more of His own fatherhood to you. May He grant you wisdom from above, which is first pure, then peaceable, gentle and easy to be entreated, that you may know when to speak and when to be silent, when to bear and when to step aside to pray. May He keep you from grieving His Spirit, and may that Spirit dwell in you as your Comforter, so that you are not overcome by hurt but overcome hurt with grace.

Let us pray together. O blessed God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, look upon this wounded child of Yours. Heal the sadness left by a father taken, and be Yourself a Father indeed. Give wisdom in dealing with a brother who knows You not, and turn his heart from scorn to faith, that he may see Jesus and live. Sustain Your servant in tending with patience for a sick mother, and let all be done in love. Keep this soul near to Christ, ungrieved by bitterness, filled with Your Spirit, and resting in Your good pleasure. For Jesus sake, Amen.
