Divination

Please pray for an end to weird experiences that I have had for years that involve divination thoughts. I believe this originated with me being exposed to the occult when I was very young. Thank you.

We hear your heart and we join with you in seeking freedom in Jesus' name from these long standing divination thoughts and weird experiences, and we thank you for sharing so honestly about being exposed to the occult when you were very young.

We want to speak truth to you in love about this, because God is very clear in His Word that divination and every form of occult practice is not from Him and is forbidden. There shall not be found with you anyone who makes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices sorcery, or an enchanter, or a sorcerer, or a charmer, or a consulter with a familiar spirit, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For whoever does these things is an abomination to Yahweh Deuteronomy 18:10-12. Also we are warned, Do not turn to those who are mediums, nor to the wizards. Do not seek them out, to be defiled by them Leviticus 19:31. These things open doors to spiritual oppression and confusion, and they can leave lasting effects on the mind and spirit, which is why you have felt tormented for years. We do not say this to condemn you, for you were young when this exposure happened, but we do lovingly rebuke any continuing hold of divination and we urge you to fully renounce it and turn away from it completely.

We also notice your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to gently but urgently share that it is only through Jesus that we have access to God and freedom from darkness. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6. There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. If you have not already done so, we encourage you to confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, for with the heart one believes resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made resulting in salvation Romans 10:9. It is by coming to Jesus, confessing our sins, and receiving His forgiveness that the power of darkness is broken, for If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed John 8:36 and If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness 1 John 1:9.

We believe God wants to set you free and give you a sound mind. For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control 2 Timothy 1:7. The battle for your thoughts is real, for we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world's rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places Ephesians 6:12, yet we have been given authority in Christ. We encourage you to take practical steps of repentance and renewal. Renounce out loud any involvement with the occult, even from childhood, and ask the Lord to forgive and cleanse you. If you still have any objects, books, charms or media connected to the occult or divination, remove them from your home as the early believers did when they brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all Acts 19:19. Submit yourself therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you James 4:7. Bring every divination thought captive to the obedience of Christ 2 Corinthians 10:5 and choose to fill your mind with what is true and holy, for whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, think about these things Philippians 4:8. Be transformed by the renewing of your mind Romans 12:2 through daily reading of Scripture, prayer, and fellowship with other believers. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil Ephesians 6:11.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we come before You together in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, and we thank You that You see this dear one and You desire freedom and peace for them. We confess that divination is sin and an abomination to You, and we renounce on their behalf every exposure to the occult from childhood and every divination thought and weird experience that has followed. We ask You to forgive and cleanse through the blood of Jesus. We rebuke every spirit of divination, confusion, fear and oppression, and we command it to leave in the name of Jesus. We ask You to close every door that was opened to darkness and to fill this heart and mind with Your Holy Spirit, Your light, and Your peace. We pray You would take every intrusive thought captive and replace it with Your truth. Help them to fix their mind on You and on Your Word day and night. Let them know in a deep way that greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world 1 John 4:4. Grant them a sound mind, restful sleep, and freedom from these experiences that have lasted for years. Teach them to walk in Your freedom, to resist the enemy, and to stand firm in Christ. Draw them close to Jesus, our only Savior, and assure them of Your forgiveness, Your love, and Your power to make them new. We ask this according to Your will and in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, amen.

We encourage you to continue to seek the Lord daily, to stay in the Word, to pray in the name of Jesus, and to walk with mature Christian believers who can support you and pray with you regularly. If these thoughts persist, we encourage you to seek godly pastoral counsel as well. God is faithful and He will complete the work of deliverance and healing He has begun in you.

Thank you for sharing something you have carried for so long. Having been exposed to the occult so young, it makes sense these intrusive divination thoughts have felt sticky and confusing for years, and we appreciate your honesty in wanting to be free of them.

We hear how wearying the weird experiences have been. Wanting them to end is a good and right desire, and God sees the way you are turning toward Him for help rather than staying curious about those old influences.

Healing in this area is often more like a steady walk than a single moment. One gentle next step that helps many is not walking alone with it. If you have a mature pastor or trusted mentor in your church, consider inviting them to walk with you over time, someone who can listen, pray with you, and help you make a clean break from any remaining occult contacts or objects you may still have, and then help you fill that space with simple, steady rhythms of prayer, Scripture reading, and fellowship. Meeting regularly with one or two faithful believers for support can make the process less isolating.

We are praying for you and would like to continue.

Father, in Jesus' name we bring our friend to You. You know the early exposure and the years of strange thoughts since. We ask for Your peace to guard their mind, for clarity and wisdom for each step forward, and for steady protection and nearness as they seek You. Lead them to trustworthy support and help them grow in knowing Your voice above all others. Amen.

Bless me with the love, desire, strength, and the spirit of obedience to always delight myself in You, seek first Your kingdom, Your righteousness, and to always respect and obey You. Bless me to know You, the way You want me to know You. So that I will trust You with my life and anyway that You move in my life. Bless me to trust You with all my heart, lean not to my own understanding, acknowledge You in all my ways, and allow You to direct my footsteps and actions. Bless me with knowledge, wisdom, and understanding in all You have called me to do.

God heal me in every area of my life. Deliver and cleanse me of everything in my life that doesn't honor You. Transform and renew my mind. Bless me with love, power, and a sound mind. Your request has been heard with much care and with prayerful concern before the Lord, and we join with you in seeking His gracious deliverance.

You describe weird experiences and divination thoughts that have followed you for years, with a root in exposure to the occult when you were very young. The Word of God teaches us plainly that divination and all dealings with the occult belong to the power of darkness from which Christ came to deliver His people. They are not to be sought, entertained, or followed, but to be renounced and forsaken as works of darkness. We do not take such thoughts lightly, nor do we ask God to bless them, but we ask Him to cleanse the mind and to bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.

There is hope for you in the very way that God saves. He is gracious and says, Deliver him from going down to the Pit: I have found a ransom. Job 33:24. Nobody would have thought of that way of deliverance if God had not thought of it, that the King's own Son should bear the penalty of our iniquities. Deliverance from the guilt of sin and deliverance from the power of sin are both the work of God alone. It is not of him that wills, nor of him that runs, but of God that shows mercy. When any soul is saved from spiritual bondage, it is the Lord Jesus who loosens the captive, and unless a supernatural power is put forth, any form of deliverance is worth nothing.

We also hear your burden concerning thoughts. The thoughts of God are precious and higher than our thoughts as the heavens are higher than the earth. Where shall we flee from His presence, for He sees us in every place, and from our earliest days He has cared for us. When the mind has been troubled by darkness, the remedy is not to look within to those vain thoughts, but to look to Christ and to have the mind renewed by His Word. The Lord who kindles the furnace sits as a Refiner at the door, and that which we receive from His fatherly hand, though it chastens sorely, is meant for our profit and to make us declare the works of the Lord.

Let us pray for you now.

O Lord our God, who has found a ransom in the blood of Thy Son, we bring this soul before Thy throne of grace. Thou hast said, Deliver him from going down to the Pit, and we plead that word. Forgive all sin, and especially any opening of the heart to the occult, whether by the will of this one or by the sin of others in early years. Wash thoroughly from iniquity and cleanse from sin by the precious blood of Christ. Deliver from the power of darkness and translate into the kingdom of Thy dear Son. Break the fascination of sin and the lingering power of those divination thoughts. Keep back this soul from the pit and let the life be preserved by Thy mercy.

Grant a renewed mind, that Thy precious thoughts may be loved and kept, and that when this one awakes, he may still be with Thee. Teach him to abhor every form of divination and to turn away from it as from noisome vanity, and to fill the heart with Thy Word, with prayer, and with the fellowship of Thy people. Give strength to renounce all occult influence, to put away all objects or practices connected with it, and to walk in the light as Thou art in the light.

We ask that these weird experiences may cease, that the mind may know peace, and that this tried one may yet say, I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. Let this affliction become a testimony of Thy delivering power, that others also may be torn from the power of the destroyer. Hear the groaning of the prisoner and loose those that are appointed to death, for Christ's sake. Amen.

We encourage you, as God gives you strength, to continue in the Scriptures daily, to pray in the name of Jesus Christ alone, for there is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved, to meet regularly with a faithful Bible believing church, and to speak openly with a trusted pastor who can walk with you, help you to renounce all former occult ground, and point you continually to Christ. If these thoughts return, do not entertain them, but turn at once to the Lord in prayer and to His promises. He is able to keep you and to make you more than conqueror through Him that loved you.
