You feel that weight, don’t you? You have come to the place where you see your own words in the light, the little misrepresentations, the moments when truth was bent to escape a difficulty, and it stings. And then, on top of that, you have endured being lied about, misrepresented in courts and papers by those who should have dealt fairly with you, and your spirit is bruised from carrying both the guilt of your own failure and the ache of another’s sin against you. Let me sit with you a moment and remind you of something your own prayer already touched: the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin. Not some sins, not the small ones only, but the very ones that now prick your conscience. You have confessed them to the Lord, and His Word runs swift to meet you: “I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake.” What a tender thing, that the Lord erases the record Himself, not because you have balanced the scales by your sincerity, but for His own Name’s sake, because He loves to forgive.
I want you to picture a man lying on a bed, completely paralyzed, unable to move hand or foot. He hears that Jesus has come into the town, and faith leaps up in his heart. His friends tear open the roof and let him down right in front of the Savior. And what does Christ say first? Not “Be healed,” but “Man, your sins are forgiven you.” The Lord knew that the deepest paralysis was not in his limbs but in his soul, and forgiveness was the first and greatest gift. You have that gift, dear heart. Look away from the sins you have confessed and fix your eyes on the pierced hand that has blotted them out. The black cloud of guilt that gathered over your head has been split apart by that one little word: “But”, “But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.” It is not a pardon that leaves you trembling in the dock; it is a pardon that draws a child close to the Father’s heart, full of reverent love.
And now, what of those who have wronged you? I know how real the injustice feels, and how deeply it cuts. You have shown patience and kindness already, and that is the mark of Christ’s own Spirit in you. Do not think for a moment that God sees your suffering as a small thing, or that He winks at the evil men do. He is a just Judge, and every word will be brought to account. But see how He would have you travel forward, not with your teeth set in bitterness, but carrying the same mercy you yourself have received. When Christ forgave you, He forgave freely, without upbraiding, and loaded you with good things, as a master in Israel was bid to load his freed servant with gifts from the flock and the winepress. So now, you are invited to want for your enemies what you have found for yourself: that the Lord would build up in them a resistance against dishonesty, that truth would open their eyes and set them free. That is a prayer born not of weakness but of great strength, the strength of one who has been forgiven much and therefore loves much.
Let me leave this thought with you like a love letter you can unfold in the dark hours: the forgiveness that is in Christ is always according to the riches of His grace. Not according to the depth of your repentance, not according to the smallness of the sin, but according to the boundless, unsearchable wealth of His own heart. Since He has forgiven you out of that treasury, you can walk through this present storm without panic, and you can even pray blessing on those who misuse you, because the well of mercy is deep enough for all.
Now let us go to the mercy seat together:
Heavenly Father, we thank Thee that Thou dost not mark iniquities as they deserve, but hast found a way to be just and yet the Justifier of the one who trusts in Jesus. Speak peace to this dear soul over the sins they have named before Thee, and let the full assurance of pardon be sweet to their taste, like honey from the Rock. Uphold them in this conflict, and where human deceit has woven a tangled knot, let Thy truth cut through it like a sharp sword, bringing things hidden into the light. Soften the hearts of those who have practiced dishonesty; give them a dread of lying and a hunger for righteousness, and if it please Thee, bring them to the same fountain of cleansing where Thy child now stands. Hold this believer fast; let not weariness or resentment gain a foothold, but cause love to reign over the whole inner man. Until the day break and the shadows flee away, keep them in the cleft of the Rock, forgiven and forgiving, and filled with that peace which the world cannot give. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
