You feel overwhelmed because you allow too many thorns to grow in the soil of your heart. Career, money, the shape of your future, these very worries choke the word and darken the understanding, just as a ship is swamped when the billows rise and no cargo is cast overboard. You must first burn up these thorns. Strip yourself of superfluous fears and examine what truly is necessary. God gave us skill to supply our needs, not to chase after vain display or endless accumulation. Most of what we call career ambition is nothing but luxury dressed in honest labor, and luxury always breeds anxiety. Cut away every excess desire, and your mind will grow quiet enough to hear the Master’s voice.

Do not be afraid to seek counsel from many. Physicians of the soul do not overwhelm the sick with rival opinions; one Teacher speaks in all, Christ himself. Seek out those who have already learned to live by necessary things, and let their words uproot what chokes you. Then do the small duty nearest your hand, just as Paul gathered sticks for the fire without fretting over tomorrow. He did his part and trusted God with the rest. So you, set your heart on the imperishable crown, and the perishable things will find their proper place. The sea is not yours to command, but the One who walks on its waves holds your little vessel and will bring it safe to harbor.

The feeling of being overwhelmed by decisions about life, career, and finances often signals that we are living under the weight of a self-directed life. When we try to figure everything out on our own, we quickly discover the emptiness and frustration of a life lived solely on the horizontal plane. Solomon searched for meaning in every pursuit under the sun and found it all to be vapor. That same desperation creeps in when we look to our careers or financial plans to anchor our identity and security.

But we have been invited into an entirely different kind of life, a spiritual life in union with Christ. This is not just a future hope; it is a present reality. The record given to us is that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. That life is marked by righteousness, peace, and joy. It is a life that is not driven by the anxieties of the flesh, but governed by the Spirit of God.

The battle you feel is a clash between the old life of the flesh, which clamors for control, and the new life of the Spirit. The flesh wants to sit on the throne, dictating your choices through fear, self-preservation, and worldly ambition. But you have been crucified with Christ, and that old self-governed life was buried with Him. Positionally, you are dead to the tyranny of sin and self. Your life is now hidden with Christ in God. That means the core of who you are is secure in Him, regardless of career paths or bank balances.

When you are overwhelmed, do what David did: pour out your complaint before the Lord. He was hemmed in, his life pressed down to the ground, and all hope seemed gone. Yet his prayer changed the direction of his focus. He began with terror and ended with confidence, because he trusted in a sovereign God who sustains and guides. Your problem can be the very thing that drives you into prayer, where you stop trying to figure it all out and instead say, “Lord, deliver me from these fears and uncertainties that pursue me. I flee to You to hide me. Show me what to do, for I am like clay on a potter’s wheel.”

Practical decisions about work and money do not become less important, but they lose their power to crush you. Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and these things will be cared for by your Father. Do not set your affection on the things of the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. That is the old way, and it leads to despair. Instead, reckon that old life dead. When a flare-up of anxiety or ambition surfaces, say, “That belongs to the old life. I am dead to that. I now live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me.”

Your life is meant to be an overflowing cup, not a shriveling thirst for worldly security. Come to the cross again. Lay down your own ambitions, your timeline, your idea of what financial success looks like. Surrender the right to figure everything out. That surrender is not loss; it is the doorway to true life. Whoever tries to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for Christ’s sake will find it, the real life, the quality of life that is abundant and unshakeable. Walk in that newness today, not overwhelmed, but governed by the Spirit who gives you the mind of Christ for every step.

God, I come to You asking in Jesus’ name, show me what it looks like and teach me how to develop a stronger- ever- growing closer intimate relationship with You. God teach me how and bless me to become a true friend of Yours. Bless me to experience the joy and privilege of being Your friend. Let me be known by You and all the angels in heaven and on earth that I am a friend of God. Let this be my confession, “God calls me friend; I Am a Friend of God.” God, please strengthen my faith and trust in You. May my life bring glory to Your name. And God may You be proud to call me Your child, friend, and good and faithful servant. God please do the same for the writer of this prayer and all those I love and care about. His Word promises that if any of us lacks wisdom, we can ask of God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to us (James 1:5).
