Matthew 8:9-10
…9"For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, 'Go!' and he goes, and to another, 'Come!' and he comes, and to my slave, 'Do this!' and he does it." 10Now when Jesus heard this, He marveled and said to those who were following, "Truly I say to you, I have not found such great faith with anyone in Israel.
Jesus commended this Roman Centurions great faith and said He had not found its equal in Israel. The Pharisees who studied the scriptures more than anyone in Israel were never commended for their faith, either weak or strong. The Centurion knew what authority was about, he understood authority. He learned this about authority by rising through the military ranks of promotion to the position of Centurions, a commander of 100 soldiers. He learned it by doing the things be was ordered to do, becoming excellent in his training, being an excellent soldier. He studied the actions of his superiors and teachers and followed their examples. Paper was not plentiful so there was no training manuals to study or books to read about "how to do" something. It was a school of hard knocks and brutal training and knowing and understanding authority.
The Pharisees had years of studying scriptures and being taught by other Pharisees having years of studying scripture and Jesus never once commended one of them for their great faith. The Pharisees had authority over the people and Jesus called them "whited sepulchres, full of dead men's bones".
