Pain has a way of commanding every bit of your attention, doesn't it? A toothache like that can make it nearly impossible to think of anything else, and in those moments it is so easy to start searching for a reason why. Our minds naturally want to trace the trouble back to some cause, or even to find someone to blame, because raw suffering feels easier to manage when we can attach it to an explanation. Yet more often than not, that search yields little comfort. It is a mercy to remember that pain and sickness in this world are not necessarily a direct bill sent from God for a specific sin. When Jesus and His disciples passed a man who had been blind from birth, their instinct was to ask whose fault it was. Jesus brushed past the question entirely, refusing to assign blame either to the man or his parents. Instead He pointed to what God could do through the very thing that caused the suffering.
That same principle holds true now, even in something as sharp and isolating as dental pain. Sickness and decay entered the world not as a moment-by-moment punishment from God, but as part of the wider brokenness that sin brought into every corner of creation. Your body is not somehow exempt from groaning under the weight of that curse, but that groaning is not the final word. The real you, the spirit, is held securely, even when the physical frame is racked with discomfort. And I have seen that the Lord is not indifferent to that ache. He who refused to turn stones into bread for His own hunger still willingly healed others, still extended mercy to suffering bodies, and still works today, sometimes instantly and sometimes through the gradual, natural processes He designed into the human frame.
I want to encourage you to guard your heart carefully during this trial. When pain drags on, a root of bitterness can plant itself deep inside. You can choose to anchor that root into resentment, wondering if God truly loves you because He hasn't removed the sting yet. Or by His grace, you can let the suffering drive your roots down deeper into Him, into steady trust rather than bitter withdrawal. The sharp edge of the present moment is not worthy to be compared with the weight of glory that awaits, but He cares about this moment too. There is often a real connection between the peace of your soul and the well-being of your body, and while a merry heart is good medicine, I know it is hard to muster merriment when the nerve throbs.
Know that I am praying, not simply for the pain to subside, but for the root cause to be healed according to His will and His wisdom. More than that, I am asking that in the waiting, you would sense the nearness of the One who already bore the ultimate weight for you. He is not distant from your agony. And we look forward with tangible hope to the day when the former things pass away, when pain and sickness and sorrow will be things we remember no more. Until then, may His grace be the cushion under this whole affliction.
