CLOTHE YOURSELVES WITH THE LORD
Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature. Romans 13:14
Are you getting dressed spiritually every day? Paul urges in Romans 13:14 that believers are to put on Christian virtues (which means moral excellence) as they would put on their clothes daily. When you are a new creature in Christ, you must put off your sinful nature and put on your new self in Christ. May that be your prayer for your spouse every day!
And to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Ephesians 4:24
I pray that every morning you remember to get dressed spiritually as you get dressed physically. Are you putting the Armor of God on you and your family every day? That is very important. It is like never forgetting to comb your hair. (Read Ephesians 6:10-18) Are you making time to do your devotions before you leave for work? Are you making time to pray a few scriptures with your spouse’s name and your children’s names in them? You are the spiritual head in your family right now. Until you see the fruits that your spouse or children are strong enough spiritually, you need to put on God’s Hedge of Protection to protect them from the devil’s tricks and schemes. Only when we get to Heaven will we know how much was prevented by praying specifically for our loved ones. I still pray for my entire family this way.
You may feel the subject of moral excellence is hopeless right now as your spouse has succumbed to Satan’s temptation and has fallen into the trap of sexual immorality. Let me share a scripture that you can pray with your spouse’s name in it:
Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart… Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant _____ repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that _____ will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will. 2 Timothy 2:22, 25-26
You need to ask, seek and knock as you keep praying for your spouse to receive the Holy Spirit’s conviction every day they are sinning and running from their Heavenly Father’s righteousness. Your spouse is in a spiritual battle daily between right and wrong. Their thoughts are being controlled by the world’s way instead of by God’s Word and way.
As you continue to clothe yourself daily, you and I must be different from the rest of the world. You and I must strive to put on Christian virtues daily and die to our sinful nature. Let me share what Colossians teaches us about clothing ourselves with godly virtues daily:
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Colossians 3:12-15
Are you ready for your spouse to call you and want to come over to see you or the children? Are you ready to have your marriage restored suddenly? What is your character like right now? Are you asking the Lord to make you more into the woman or man of God that He wants you to be?
The scripture above is a powerful reminder for men and women who are praying for restoration of their marriage. It is teaching you to bear with each other. One dictionary meaning says: to support or hold up, to forgive and God’s Word says to put on love, clothe yourself with Jesus Christ who is love. He loves unity.
Are you battling anger, bitterness, rage, and unforgiveness? Ask the Holy Spirit to cleanse you from all unrighteousness every day, until you know that you are truly walking in unconditional love for your spouse or any other person who is in your spouse’s life.
Putting on Jesus Christ (Romans 13:14 at top) means to allow Him to cover you, so when others see you they see only the Lord’s righteousness. When you see or talk to your spouse, do they see and hear the Lord Jesus radiating out of you or are they seeing and hearing a man or woman who is very angry and bitter about everything that has happened and will not let your spouse forget anything? You want your Lord Jesus Christ not only to live in you, but to radiate His robe of righteousness on you. When you choose to live like this, you will not feed your fleshly sinful nature, but will feed your spirit and soul who are striving to be more like Jesus every day.
There are many men of God who recommend you read the book of Romans more than once and it will change your life forever. May you take that as a challenge to understand one of the keys to the life of righteousness. In fact, pray that the Lord will orchestrate your husband or wife to read or hear a teaching on the book of Romans.
The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature. Romans 13:12-14
As you read the scripture above, can you see how easily you could write this scripture down and pray the scripture as a prayer for your spouse? Remember how Jesus defeated Satan by speaking the Word of God out loud. May you do likewise. I urge you to stand firm in your faith. We hear of God moving mightily in so many difficult marriage circumstances, as God’s perfect will does prevail.
I pray the Holy Spirit convicts you daily to never stop praying for your spouse and for all prodigals to be obedient to the Holy Spirit’s voice, convicting them to turn from their sinful lifestyle. My prayer is that the Lord will knock down all the walls that are blocking your spouse’s return home now in the Name of Jesus.
Lord, we are both praying that their spouse will repent and turn from their life of sin–immediately. I pray that every prodigal spouse/child will cry out to their Lord confessing their sins, repenting and asking for forgiveness and will have a heart transformation, suddenly. Prodigals do come home and can be set free from their sinful nature! Never doubt the power of God! Believe!
