We share your deep concern and grieve over how many who claim the name of Christ have become comfortable with—even celebratory of—the very things Scripture warns us to flee from. The apostle John declares in 1 John 2:15-16, *"Don’t love the world or the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father’s love isn’t in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—isn’t the Father’s, but is the world’s."* And James 4:4 leaves no room for ambiguity: *"Don’t you know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God."*
Halloween is not a harmless tradition—it is a festival rooted in paganism, the occult, and the glorification of darkness. Ephesians 5:11 commands us, *"Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather even reprove them."* Yet how many churches now host "harvest festivals" or "trunk-or-treats," attempting to sanitize what is inherently ungodly? How many parents dress their children as witches, ghosts, or demons, laughing as they parade them door-to-door? How many youth groups watch horror films or listen to music that exalts violence, sexual immorality, or rebellion against God? These are not gray areas—they are direct violations of God’s Word.
Jesus did not call us to blend in with the world but to be set apart. *"You are the light of the world... Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven"* (Matthew 5:14-16). If we look, sound, and act no different from the unsaved, how can we claim to be transformed by the Holy Spirit? Romans 12:2 tells us, *"Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God."*
As for the question of salvation—only God knows the heart. But we *can* examine the fruit. Jesus warned in Matthew 7:16-20, *"By their fruits you will know them. Do you gather grapes from thorns or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree produces good fruit, but the corrupt tree produces evil fruit. A good tree can’t produce evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree produce good fruit. Every tree that doesn’t grow good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore by their fruits you will know them."* If someone claims to be a Christian yet eagerly participates in the works of darkness, enjoys entertainment that mocks God, or sees no issue with celebrating what is demonic, we must lovingly but firmly ask: *Where is the evidence of repentance? Where is the hatred for sin?*
This is not about legalism—it is about a heart that has been regenerated by the Holy Spirit. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, *"If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new."* When God saves us, He gives us a *new nature*—one that recoils at what once delighted us. The things we once loved, we now despise. The things we once ran toward, we now flee from. If there is no conviction over sin, no desire for holiness, no separation from the world’s corruption, then we must examine whether true salvation has taken place.
We also recognize that many believers have been deceived, thinking these things are "no big deal" because the culture—and even some churches—have normalized them. But God’s Word does not change with the times. Deuteronomy 18:9-12 is clear: *"When you have come into the land which Yahweh your God gives you, you shall not learn to follow the abominations of those nations... For whoever does these things is an abomination to Yahweh."* Celebrating Halloween, dabbling in the occult (even "jokingly"), or consuming media that glorifies evil is not a neutral act—it is rebellion against a holy God.
So what must we do? First, we must repent—*individually and corporately*—for the ways we have compromised. We must ask God to break our hearts over the sin we have tolerated. Second, we must separate ourselves from these things, not out of self-righteousness, but out of love for Christ. Third, we must boldly but lovingly confront our brothers and sisters who are walking in deception. Jude 1:22-23 urges us, *"Have mercy on some who doubt; save some, snatching them out of the fire with fear, hating even the clothing stained by the flesh."*
Let us pray with urgency and broken hearts:
*"Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, grieving over the way Your people have embraced the very things You abhor. Lord, we confess that we have too often turned a blind eye to sin, calling evil "harmless" and darkness "light." Forgive us for our compromise. Forgive us for loving the world more than we love You. Cleanse Your church, O God. Purify Your people. Give us a holy hatred for sin and a burning passion for righteousness.
We plead for those who claim Your name yet walk in darkness—open their eyes to the truth! Let conviction fall upon them. Let them see the danger of playing with the enemy’s tools. Draw them to repentance, Lord. Do not let them be deceived into thinking they can serve two masters.
Give us boldness to speak the truth in love, even when it is unpopular. Help us to stand firm, unashamed of the Gospel, unwilling to bend to the patterns of this world. Raise up a remnant who will not bow to Baal, who will not celebrate what You detest, who will live as strangers and pilgrims in this land.
Protect our children, Father. Shield their minds from the corruption of this age. Give parents wisdom and courage to guard their homes, to train their children in Your ways, and to refuse the lies of the culture.
We ask all this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us into His kingdom of light. May we walk as children of light, exposing the deeds of darkness, for Your glory alone. Amen."*
To those reading this: Examine your own heart. Are there areas where you have made peace with the world? Are there "harmless" traditions, forms of entertainment, or relationships that do not honor God? Repent today. Turn away from them. *"Little children, keep yourselves from idols"* (1 John 5:21). The time is short, and the stakes are eternal. Let us live as those who have been bought with a price—no longer our own, but His.
