We understand the deep pain and betrayal you must feel when those who claim the name of Christ have acted in such a dishonest and ungodly manner. The Bible is clear that stealing and deceit are sins, and God’s Word does not condone such behavior—especially when it is done under the pretext of faith. Let us first address the seriousness of what has been done to you, for these actions are not only against you but against the Lord Himself.
The Scriptures warn us in **Proverbs 22:7**, *"The rich rules over the poor. The borrower is servant to the lender."* While lending can be an act of kindness, it is not wrong to expect repayment, especially when the borrower has the means but refuses out of greed or hardness of heart. Even more grievous is when someone uses the name of Jesus to justify their theft, for this is blasphemy—a sin that God takes very seriously. **Exodus 20:7** says, *"You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain, for Yahweh will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain."* To invoke the name of Christ while committing fraud is to mock His holiness, and such behavior will not go unanswered by God.
Yet, we must also remember the words of our Lord in **Luke 6:30-35**, where He teaches, *"Give to everyone who asks you, and don’t ask him who takes away your goods to give them back again. As you would like people to do to you, do exactly so to them... But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing back; and your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind toward the unthankful and evil."* This does not mean we enable sin or fail to seek justice, but it does call us to examine our hearts. Are we trusting God to vindicate us, or are we consumed by bitterness? **Romans 12:19** reminds us, *"Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, 'Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.'"* Your pain is valid, but we must release this burden to the Lord, who judges righteously.
That said, this does not mean you should remain passive if there are lawful means to recover what was stolen. **Proverbs 25:26** compares a righteous man who falters before the wicked to a muddied spring—useless. If legal action is possible and just, it may be wise to pursue it, not out of vengeance, but to uphold what is right and possibly bring conviction to their hearts. However, if the amounts are small or the effort would cause more harm than good, it may be better to release it to God and trust Him to provide for you in other ways. Pray for wisdom, as **James 1:5** promises, *"But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him."*
We also urge you to examine whether these individuals are truly brothers and sisters in Christ. **1 John 3:10** tells us, *"In this the children of God are revealed, and the children of the devil. Whoever doesn’t do righteousness is not of God, neither is he who doesn’t love his brother."* If they are unrepentant in their theft and deception, their claim to faith may be false. **Matthew 7:16-20** warns that we will know false believers by their fruits. A tree that produces robbery, deceit, and unrepentance is not of God, no matter what name they invoke.
Now, let us pray for you in this matter:
Heavenly Father, we lift up our brother/sister before You, who has been wronged by those who borrowed and refused to repay, even using Your holy name to justify their sin. Lord, You see the deceit and the pain it has caused. We ask that You would vindicate our brother/sister in Your perfect timing and way. If it is Your will, soften the hearts of those who have stolen, that they may repent and make restitution. But if they harden their hearts, we pray that You would expose their deeds and bring conviction upon them. Father, we also ask that You would provide for our brother/sister in ways they cannot even imagine, restoring what was taken and blessing them beyond measure. Guard their heart from bitterness, and fill them with Your peace that surpasses understanding. Remind them that You are their Provider and Defender, and that no weapon formed against them shall prosper. We rebuke the spirit of theft and deceit in the name of Jesus Christ, and we declare that You, Lord, will repay what has been stolen. Strengthen our brother/sister to forgive as You have forgiven us, not because the offense was small, but because Your grace is greater. May this situation be used for Your glory, and may our brother/sister’s faith grow stronger through it. In the mighty and righteous name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
Finally, we encourage you to continue walking in integrity, even when others do not. **Psalm 37:21** says, *"The wicked borrow, and don’t pay back, but the righteous give generously."* Your generosity should not be exploited, but neither should it be withheld out of fear. Trust that God will guide you in future decisions about lending, and remember that your ultimate treasure is in heaven, where no thief can steal. Stay rooted in prayer, and let the Holy Spirit lead you in how to handle each situation. If these individuals are part of your church or Christian community, it may also be wise to seek counsel from godly leaders who can help address the sin biblically. May the Lord bless you and keep you as you seek His face in this.
