Body shutting down

We are deeply concerned to hear about the physical struggles you are enduring. When our bodies are not functioning as they should, it is a reminder of how fragile we are and how much we need the Lord’s healing touch. The Bible tells us in Psalm 34:18-19, "Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but Yahweh delivers him out of them all." Even in this difficult time, we trust that the Lord sees your suffering and is near to you.

First and foremost, we urge you to seek immediate medical attention if you have not already done so. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), and it is our responsibility to care for them. A fever that persists, along with a lack of appetite or thirst, can be signs of a serious condition that requires professional care. Do not delay in reaching out to a doctor or going to the emergency room if necessary. The Lord often works through the hands of medical professionals to bring healing, and there is no shame in seeking their help.

We also want to address the spiritual aspect of your struggle. Physical ailments can sometimes be accompanied by spiritual weariness, and it is important to bring your burdens before the Lord. In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says, "Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest." Even if you do not feel like eating or drinking, we encourage you to "taste and see that the Lord is good" (Psalm 34:8). Spend time in prayer, even if it is just a simple cry for help. The Lord hears the prayers of His children, and He is faithful to respond.

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up our dear brother/sister who is struggling with their health. Lord, You are the Great Physician, and we ask for Your healing touch to be upon them. We pray that You would guide the hands of the doctors and medical professionals caring for them, giving them wisdom and discernment. Father, we ask that You would strengthen their body, restore their appetite, and bring down their fever. Give them the desire to drink and eat, that they may be nourished and sustained.

Lord, we also pray for their spirit. In times of physical weakness, it can be easy to feel distant from You, but we know that You are near to the brokenhearted. Comfort them with Your presence, Lord, and remind them that You are their refuge and strength. Help them to trust in You, even when they do not understand what is happening. We declare Your healing power over their body in the name of Jesus, and we trust that You will restore them to full health.

We rebuke any spirit of fear or despair that may be trying to take hold in this situation. The Word of God tells us in 2 Timothy 1:7, "For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control." We speak life and strength over our brother/sister, and we declare that they will not be overcome by this trial. Instead, they will rise up in faith, trusting in Your goodness and mercy.

If there is any unconfessed sin or unforgiveness in their heart, we pray that You would reveal it to them, Lord. James 5:16 tells us, "Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed." We ask that You would cleanse their heart and draw them closer to You through this trial.

Finally, Lord, we ask that You would use this time to deepen their faith. Help them to see Your hand at work, even in the midst of their suffering. May they emerge from this trial with a stronger trust in You and a testimony of Your faithfulness. We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, the name above every name, the name by which we are saved and healed. Amen.

In addition to seeking medical help, we encourage you to reach out to your church family or trusted believers who can pray with you and provide support. Isolation can make physical struggles even harder to bear, and the Lord often uses His people to bring comfort and encouragement. Galatians 6:2 tells us, "Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." Allow others to walk alongside you in this time.

We also want to remind you of the power of God’s Word. Even if you do not feel like reading, try listening to Scripture or worship music. The Word of God is alive and active (Hebrews 4:12), and it has the power to minister to your spirit even when your body is weak. Psalm 107:20 says, "He sends his word, and heals them, and delivers them from their graves." Speak the Word over your situation, and declare God’s promises of healing and restoration.

Lastly, we want to gently remind you of the importance of coming to God through Jesus Christ. It is only through faith in Him that we have access to the Father and the promise of eternal life. John 14:6 says, "Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.'" If you have not already done so, we encourage you to surrender your life to Jesus, confessing Him as your Lord and Savior. He is the only one who can save you and give you the hope of eternal life.

We will continue to pray for you, trusting that the Lord will bring healing and restoration to your body. May you feel His presence with you in a tangible way, and may you experience His peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). You are not alone in this struggle, and we stand with you in faith, believing that God will see you through.

We’re so sorry you’re feeling this way. When your body feels like it’s shutting down and you can’t bring yourself to eat or drink, it’s not only exhausting, it can be quietly frightening. That kind of heat and loss of appetite deserves attention, and we’re glad you reached out.

Please don’t try to push through this alone. What you’re describing can sometimes point to something serious, like heat exhaustion or another medical condition that needs prompt care. We want to encourage you to contact your doctor, or visit an urgent care, as soon as you can, even if you’re tempted to wait. In the meantime, try to let at least one trusted person near you know what’s happening so you’re not isolated.

Even when your strength is gone, you are not forgotten. God sees you right in this exhausted, overheated place. He doesn’t demand that we have everything together before we cry out, He hears us in the middle of our weakness. We’re joining you in asking Him to calm your body, restore your appetite, and bring whatever help you need to your door.

Lord Jesus, we lift up this precious one whose body feels like it’s giving out. Please bring cooling, steady relief, and prompt the right people to care for them well. Give wisdom to doctors, and quiet any anxiety that’s crept in with the symptoms. Restore appetite and strength gently, day by day, and hold this person close in Your peace. We trust You as the Healer, even when we don’t yet see how. In Your name we pray.

The body’s refusal of meat and drink is a sermon in itself, a parable of the soul’s condition when it has lost its appetite for the Bread of Heaven. You say it is too hot, and the frame shuts down, well may the heat of trial or the fever of sin dry up the springs of natural desire. But mark this: "The full soul loathes an honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet." Often it takes the failing of all earthly refreshment to teach us that neither bread nor water can satisfy the spirit. When the body will not receive its necessary food, it is a loud alarm that the soul must look elsewhere for its staying. You are brought low, and this is the place where the sweet morsel of Christ, dipt in the vinegar of affliction, becomes precious indeed.

Ask yourself, then, whether there be not a spiritual appetite growing amid this bodily fast. The world’s dainties pall; its pleasures are a dead loss when health is struck away. What profit is there in the richest table if a man cannot eat? And what profit in all the world’s gain if it leaves the soul lean? There is a hunger which God alone implants, a holy craving that the full-fed worldly man never knows. The Holy Spirit, when He comes to work salvation, first empties us of self-trust, brings us to a sense of sin, and breaks the stony heart. That breaking, that tenderness, is the first sign of life. Have you known a melting within? Has the thought of your sins become a weight no longer to be laughed off? If so, the shut-up body is an open door for the love of God to be shed abroad in your heart by that same Spirit.

Do not mistake this bodily weakness for mere sickness. It may be the severe mercy of God to wean you from earth and awaken a cry for Christ. The heart that is whole within its own strength feels no need of a physician; but when the flesh is brought down, the spirit often looks up. Consider the meek and lowly heart of Jesus, He stooped to conquer, submitting to hunger, thirst, and death itself to redeem you. His heart is not hard toward the frail; He knows your frame. Come to Him, then, with a humble, tender spirit, confessing that all your springs of comfort are dried up unless He unlock the fountain. The love of God is like a sealed alabaster box until the Spirit pours it out: pray that He would pour it over your panting soul, filling every drought-stricken part with the fragrance of Christ’s compassion.

But take heed against the deadening influence of hearing these things without receiving them. To know the truth notionally and yet remain without repentance is to lose even what you seem to have. Your present low estate is a call to turn from all self-reliance, to let the Word do its work deeply, and to seek that heart-knowledge of God which is eternal life. The same Christ who is Head of the Church is the gentle Savior who will not break the bruised reed. Let this season of bodily fasting become a feast of faith; let the emptiness cry out for Him to fill it. He has promised a heart of flesh to those who come, a tender, teachable spirit that can taste His sweetness. Trust Him to work in you both to will and to do, and do not be afraid of having too much of Christ, no soul ever yet perished of an overdose of His grace.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your body feels as though it is shutting down, the heat oppressive, and the desire for food and drink gone. This is a heavy trial, but do not despair. The body, as I have often said, is not an evil thing. God created it, and in its weakness it can become a bridle for the soul, subduing pride and arrogance. When the flesh is brought low, the spirit has occasion to rise.

Consider this affliction as a kind of martyrdom, not by sword or fire, but by the slow burning of sickness. Mortify the body willingly in your mind, and offer this suffering to God. Do not blame the body for its frailty; rather, use it to turn inward. The body is not for gluttony or ease, but for the Lord, and even now, in its faintness, it can serve Him.

Speak to God of your own faults, not of others. Confess your sins, and let this physical weakness remind you of the soul’s need for healing. Draw near to the King with gentleness and meekness, falling down before Him in mind if not in body. He who forgave the paralytic his sins before healing his limbs knows your deeper need.

Do not fear death, for Christ has trampled it down. Yet if this illness should lead to the grave, let it find you watching and prepared. The body’s uncomely parts, its present shame and feebleness, can be clothed with honor through patient endurance. Even now, though you cannot eat or drink, your soul can be nourished by prayer and trust.

If it is possible, take a little water, a morsel, not for pleasure but to sustain the body which houses the Spirit. But far more, hunger and thirst after righteousness. This heat and exhaustion are not without purpose; they can burn away the love of worldly things. Let the fire of trial quench every unreasonable appetite.

You are a member of Christ’s body, and no member, however feeble, is unnecessary. In your weakness, you may do great work for the whole Church by your patience and prayers. So be not cast down. Commend yourself to God, and say with the Psalmist, “I will confess my iniquity,” and He will forgive the impiety of your heart. May He raise you up, whether in body or in spirit, for His glory.

When your body seems to be shutting down and even the most basic drives stop working the way they should, it is deeply unsettling. God designed your body with those hunger and thirst drives for a reason. They are part of the marvel of His creation, meant to sustain you. When that system goes haywire and you feel no desire to eat or drink, it is a reminder that sin has introduced corruption and decay into the physical world. Your body is temporal, and its weakness does not define who you truly are.

The real you is your spirit, dwelling within that body. This body is the medium through which you express yourself for now, but it is not the final chapter. When a body becomes a place of restriction, pain, or suffering and can no longer fulfill the purposes for which God designed it, He in His love eventually releases the spirit from the tent. You are not just a collection of elements that will return to dust. What is seen is temporary; what is unseen is eternal. There is a new body waiting for you, a far superior model that will not be subject to frailty, sickness, or the breakdown you are feeling now. It will not depend on these fading drives. That is the hope set before you, and it is real.

Right now, you need the strength that the body of Christ provides. Just as your physical body has many members, each necessary for the whole to function, you are a vital part of that spiritual body, and you need the rest of the body to support you. No one is an isolated big toe going down the street. You were not meant to carry this alone. Lean on the other members around you. Let them bring you care, speak truth over you, and lift you up when your own strength is gone. The unity of that fellowship, working together in love, is one of the ways God tempers the body and gives honor to the parts that lack.

Jesus understood physical suffering completely. He healed all who came to Him, fulfilling the prophecy that He took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses. That promise is not only a spiritual truth about sin; it extends to the care of your whole being, physical included. When you lie down in this weakness, you do not need to be afraid. Sleep can be sweet, even now, because your confidence is in whose you are, not just in what your body can currently endure. The peace of God can guard your heart and mind as you rest in Him.

May the Lord renew your desire for what your body truly needs, and may you taste His mercy in the midst of this struggle. Ask Him for the wisdom of how to care for your frame in these days, whether by small, gentle nourishment or by medical help He provides. But above all, fix your eyes on the unseen reality. Your life is hidden with Christ, and the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead will give life to your mortal body when the time comes. Until then, you are held, you are not forgotten, and every part of the body is honored in His sight.
