The forum software that this board uses is constantly being updated. One of the updates that will be coming will drop the separate use of avatars and photos. Instead, there will just be one 'photo'. This 'photo' can be a picture or image of some kind.
The main difference is that the 'photo' will be used everywhere instead of having a separate avatar and a photo both being used in different places. It is probably for the best. It is somewhat hard to understand the difference between the two and where they are used.

The Living Avatars have now been moved to the photo section of your profile. Any Living Avatars you created are still there and can now be used as your photo if you want. There are also some new, larger, Bible Verse graphics in the Living Avatars section. The older, smaller ones are not be available.
As of today, you will no longer have two pictures (the avatar the and photo). Now we will just have the one photo (which can be an avatar or a picture).
Also, only members will be able to see your photo. If someone is not logged in, they can only see a generic image instead of your actual photo.
