Answering The Athiest

I have two older brothers. They are both athiests, so I emailed recently asking why they didn't believe in God, and this is what one of them said, copied and pasted directly from his email:

1. Death, disease, war, famine, rape, child abuse, poverty, nuclear weapons, torture, genocide, natural disasters, and on and on. An omnipotent being, who could stop it all in the blink of an eye, especially when it's happening to his "children," but doesn't? Why? And don't give me the standard "god works in mysterious ways," nothing justifies any of this. Which brings me to my next point...

2. The existence of god provides no meaning of life. One of the major running themes in the bible (especially the old testament) is the concept that god regularly tests our faith. Therefore, we are all here on Earth to prove our worthiness to enter heaven. But of course, an omniscient being knows every single thing that happens, has happened, and ever will happen. God knows every decision we'll ever make a million years before we are born. So what possible need could he have to test anyone, ever? Of what value is a test when you already have the answer key?

3. Since you are very well read in Christianity, I'm going to assume you're familiar with the concept of intelligent design. As you also know, I studied evolutionary theory extensively for five years, and the two ideas conflict with each other. The main argument of those who support intelligent design theory seems to be that the complexity of life on this planet requires a conscious, guiding hand. After all, it couldn't possibly have happened by accident, right? I take the exact opposite position. Organic life on Earth is so massively, ludicrously, needlessly complex that it could only have happened by accident! Consider the game Mousetrap. The entire point of that game is to take arguably the simplest invention in the history of man and make it laughably overcomplicated. It's fun because it's ridiculous. However, life on Earth in its current form requires us to accept the idea that a deity infinitely wiser than ourselves managed to create the game version of a mousetrap, without the design of an actual, simple, effective mousetrap ever occurring to him.

I replied back yesterday, again straight from what I told him:

1. - No one is innocent. Everyone has sinned (disobeyed God's commands). Some may have sinned more than others, but we are still all sinners and the consequence of even one sin is death. When God first created the world, there was no death or pain. It only entered the world when people sinned. God doesn't stop it because He gave people free will: He gave them the choice to obey or disobey Him, warning that sin results in death. Because people did choose to disobey Him, He allowed them to suffer the consequences. It really isn't God's fault that there is so much pain in the world. In reality, it is ours; it is the fault of every human being who has ever lived. (except Jesus) Nevertheless, God is loving, which is why He came up with a solution to end the pain caused by our sin.
- Jesus suffered more than anyone who has ever lived. I have studied execution methods extensively and I will testify to anyone that crucifixion (especially the way the Romans did it) is indeed the most painful method of execution ever invented. Cicero, a Roman leader, has said that crucifixion is "one of the most abominable torments that the very inventive genius of torture has devised". That is not all, He was also whipped and severely beaten multiple times. He was also, as we all know, betrayed for thirty pieces of silver, which at the time, was about the price of a slave. If you would like to know in more detail what He suffered, try any of the following:

http://www.cbn.com/SpiritualLife/On..._View_of_the_Crucifixion_of_Jesus_Christ.aspx

http://christiananswers.net/q-eden/jesusdeath.html

http://www.frugalsites.net/jesus/crucifixion.htm

By the way, Jesus was the one and only person who never ever sinned!

- God did something to end suffering. The reason Jesus, who never sinned, suffered so much was to end suffering for US! We are like criminals condemned to death and the only way to escape death is if someone else died for you, or we owe a large sum of money, and Jesus paid our debts so we wouldn't be thrown into debtor's prison. At this point, you are probably asking why people who have accepted Jesus' free gift of forgiveness still suffer. I will get to that in a few minutes, in the next section.

2. - God desires a relationship with people. The Bible says how man and God walked together in the Garden of Eden. That is life's purpose: to have a relationship with God. When people sinned, the relationship was broken and they were separated from God. Therefore, Jesus died to pay the price for sin so we could be close to God like He wants. That is the concept of a new creation after the end and judgement of the world. God will make everything new so that there will be no more pain or death and people will never again be separated from God. Even now, if you accept Jesus' forgiveness, you can have God as your friend and father.
- God tests us for OUR benefit. You present a decent point that I admit has puzzled me at times. I have wondered why God would test our faith if He knows what will happen anyway. But now, after prayer and thought, I think I have an answer. God's testing is more for us than it is for Him. I know this sounds weird at first, but Paul put it well in the book of Romans: "We also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance, perseverance, character, and character, hope." It often doesn't seem like it, but perhaps God tests people to strengthen them and produce hope. It may hurt a lot in the midst of suffering, but in the end, it was really for our own good all along. This ties into why Jesus' followers suffer. It is to strengthen our faith in Him.

3. - God's thoughts are higher than ours. I am actually glad you brought this up again because I came up with an answer I didn't think of when were debating at Olive Garden. Since God is infinitely smarter (He knows everything!) than any human, perhaps this is simple to Him. A marble looks huge to an ant, but small to us. Chemistry was hard for me when I studied this past year, but it what I did probably seems quite simple to an expert chemist. In a way, it's all about perspective. The human body and all of the universe seems so amazing and complex, but maybe it looks kind of like a basic mousetrap to an infinitely knowledgeable Creator.
- God will do what He pleases. Since God is all-powerful, He can do whatever He wants. There is a reason He made Creation this way. Maybe He was just being creative, like an artist. For example, if a teacher assigns a simple write something and put it on a poster project and means it to be basic. There's probably always going to be someone who likes to add glitter, images, marker, fancy fonts, a creative format, beads, etc. I know that no analogy is perfect, but the point is that another theory is that God was been creative because He wanted to. After all, artistic people got that sense from Him, since people are made in God's image. I know you probably don't believe this, and I kind of prefer my first theory anyway, but I think it could be worth considering.

I hope this helps anyone else who has unbelieving family and friends. Some of their questions are hard to answer, and I hope you will be encouraged by this. Please pray for my brothers, that I continue giving good answers in emails and pray that they would come to Jesus. Please comment! Let me know what you think of my reply and tell me about who know that doesn't believe and I will pray for them with you! Have a blessed day everyone!

Try not to debate;

Romans 1:29-32

King James Version (KJV)

30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Hi crazyBiblenerd,

Thank you so much for your post! I am also currently witnessing to someone who really hurt me (See my prayer request!) and would like to add a few more comments/thoughts that I'm also learning.

1. Most people have no idea about the level of academia that has gone into the Bible. This is something I've realised and being well-read up on this has enabled me to ask them first: What evidence do you have for saying there is no evidence?" (The guy im praying for said this is the reason why Christians are ridiculous. Just because there is no evidence doesnt mean there is evidence. - to which you can then bring in the evidence and question his assumptions that perhaps he’s made the WRONG assumption there’s no evidence just because you’ve asked for evidence for his viewpoint).

2. By establishing the historical reliability and accuracy of the Bible, when facts are presented, most people may go ok so what? It doesnt prove Jesus existed. What they are really having issues with is the philosophical argument for God, not the historical fact that the tomb was empty, Christianity spread rapidly etc etc – facts that even scholars who are skeptic attest to. By establishing the reliability of the New Testament, even if they do not believe it to be God inspired, at the very least we can take what it says to be a VERY TRUE HISTORICAL ACCOUNT. That means that we can also believe that Jesus DID live a virtuous life, he WAS crucified, he DID perform miracles etc etc.

So basically lay out the facts for them and say the facts are there, its now what is the best rationale explanation for this. (this can also lead to discussions about the swoon theory, the disciples stole Jesus’ body, Jesus had an unidentified twin brother etc etc…)

3. I really liked your points that God died to end suffering for our sake. Most people cant grasp why anyone will do that for them, simply because we live in a conditional world. Its astonishing even for a believer to grasp that I am worthy enough, God sees enough value in me to pay the price for me. An evangelism book I read explained this really nicely.

EVERYONE – sin. Even if you don’t kill, steal, but as long as you have lied, cursed, and am prideful, putting yourself first in any situation, you have sinned. That is the standard God uses to measure us against. Therefore everyone has sinned.

GOD – is loving, is righteous and is Holy (so sin separates us from Him) in nature

CHRIST – The punishment for sin is death. God needs to mete out punishment to fulfil his righteous and justice nature because He cannot stand impurity. However, He also loves us. So He decides to take our place. The only way He can do that is by being a man so He can die. The only person who can do that is someone who has not sinned and is willing to do it (not forced). This is how Christ fulfils this. In this way, God upheld his righteous nature, satisfied his Holiness and expressed His love. We value something based on the price we pay for it – that is how much God values us.

YOU – its up to each one of us to recognise that we need forgiveness. Its freely given, we need to ask to receive. God will not force us, God wants us to receive His love but we choose not to humble ourselves before Him. but we also need to remember that there are consequences. (Hell = being a place where WE choose to be). Believing that God exists is not enough, we need to believe IN God.

4. Also, its really hard and I immensely struggle with this too, but yes, God can do whatever He pleases. Like a father who refuses his kid an entire bag of lollies, the kid cannot understand why, but the father knows better, that what hurts now is for the greater good. It builds character. Likewise, our finite minds cannot comprehend what God has in store for us.

5. Ask them if they have read the Bible – if they haven’t, ask them how they have formed their conclusions without knowing what it is they are refuting.

6. Ask why does religion have to be boxed up in a square if we apply reason, logic, rational thought to every other aspect of our lives. That itself is illogical. Science in the 17th century exploded from Christian theology. The Bible says to test everything…and to love God with all our heart, soul, strength and MIND.

7. Challenge naturalism/materialism. If atheists say religious people are not capable of logical thought (like the one Im praying for), ask them why they ARE demonstrating thought. Their philosophy doesn’t allow thought because matter only collides, it doesn’t produce thought. Matter creates a brain, not the mind.

Regarding your brother’s reply on chance – perhaps astrophysics and mathematics may demonstrate to him proof that chance of random matter we see coming together are pretty much nil. E.g. if someone knocked on the door, is it possible no one was behind it? Possibly. Is it reasonable? No.

8. Recognise people don’t come to Christ mostly simply intellectually. There are also emotional and the issues of the will – e.g. I rather not believe in God because it means there may be an Authority who does not approve of my lifestyle, its easier not to believe because God is a killjoy. Explain that God created the world including love and happiness, so He is not sadistic in nature. Use Blaise Pascall’s matrix of 4 situations (There is a God, There is no God, I believe, I don’t believe) to highlight logically why believing may be a logical useful step and is simply a win-win situation. Ask them if there was more evidence to show more reason to believe in God, would they? If the honest answer is no, the reason is not entirely intellectual.

9. Ask them to take the step to experience. If they have lived a life without God only, they have no other life experience to compare it to, to see which one is more fulfilled. Share personal struggles and how God supported you.

10. Continue to live out a life that is filled with things of the Spirit consistently and treat the person with love as Christ would. After being insulted that religious people are devoid of logic and scientific thought and that atheists are generally smarter than Christians, I had to swallow my saliva and pray that God will help me not be aggressive. It was not about winning the argument. If I had entered a quarrel with him on that, Im demonstrating poor Christianly behaviour and attitudes.

  1. Pray and fast, pray and fast, pray and fast.

I hope this helps whoever listening too! Thanks for posting your honest responses and your brother’s questions. It would be great if you could please pray for the person im witnessing to. I would be privileged to pray for your brothers too!!

Thanks again!

One more thing I thought of...reagrding suffering and evil in the world...ask your brother to imagine, if people followed God's commands...would there BE such evil that he raises? As you yourself mentioned, it is people who choose to inflict such evil. We are all intrinsically ingrained with moral absolutes. Whether we choose to follow or not is a different matter.

@fairydust1812

Thank you for the advice! I always hate when people make the assumption that Christians are anti-science and illogical. I'll pray for your friend! I know how frustrating it can be when their minds are so closed to God. Keep trying, let's not give up.

And on the subject of the Resurrection, I wrote an essay about it for school and posted it on this blog. http://www.prayerrequest.com/blog/260/entry-8514-how-we-know-the-resurrection-is-true/ If you find time to look at it, I would appreciate your feedback! Again, good luck with your friend! I will keep posting about my brother's emails, if you want to check back sometime.

@316

I try to speak the Gospel accurately, truthfully, kindly and forever covered in prayer. My brother is one of the many who think science proves there is no God. I am trying to show that he is wrong in a loving, gentle way. Thank you for the feedback. I pray God gives me wisdom always when talking to them.
