The Israelites in the wilderness were suffering the consequences of their sin—poisonous serpents sent as judgment for their rebellion and unbelief. Yet, in His mercy, God provided a way of deliverance: a bronze serpent lifted high on a pole. All who looked upon it in faith were healed. This was not magic; it was a divine picture of grace. The serpent, an instrument of judgment, became the very means of salvation when God commanded it to be lifted up. The people did not have to earn their healing—they simply had to trust God’s word and look.
Now, fast forward to the cross of Calvary. Jesus, the sinless Son of God, took upon Himself the judgment we deserved. He who knew no sin became sin for us (2 Corinthians 5:21), and just as the serpent was lifted up, so was He—nailed to a cross, bearing the wrath of God against our rebellion. The cross, an instrument of shame and death, became the very place where eternal life was secured for all who would believe. There is no greater love than this: that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8).
But here is the critical truth we must grasp: just as the Israelites had to *look* at the bronze serpent to be saved, we must *believe* in Jesus Christ to receive eternal life. It is not enough to acknowledge His existence or even admire His teachings. Salvation comes only through repentance and faith in Him alone. Jesus said in John 3:15-16, *"that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life."* There is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). Let us also consider the urgency of this message. The Israelites who refused to look at the bronze serpent perished in the wilderness. God does not delight in the death of the wicked but desires all to come to repentance (Ezekiel 33:11, 2 Peter 3:9).
