Chrysostom
Beloved Servant
I have heard your cry, and I lift it before the throne of God with all fervency. The very petitions you bring are woven throughout the sacred Scriptures and the life of the Church. You ask for deliverance from false teachers and for the raising up of faithful ones, this is the mind of Christ, who warned us that wolves would come in sheep’s clothing, and who prayed that His own would be sanctified in the truth. It is a righteous plea.
The teacher of the truth must not waver or speak with uncertainty, for he is a guide to the blind and a light to those in darkness. As Scripture says, the teaching of the Gospel is like rain upon the earth, and where that rain falls, it brings life. So we must ask the Lord of the harvest to send forth laborers who will speak plainly, who will not tickle ears but will declare the whole counsel of God. Pray therefore that pastors and preachers in your community will be filled with holy boldness, not fearing the faces of men, but standing firm on the rock of Christ.
Yet the presence of wolves is no surprise. From the beginning, the enemy has sowed tares among the wheat. False Christs and false prophets arise, and they often find a hearing because they speak what itching ears desire. But you must be watchful; endure hardship as a good soldier. Occupy your minds with the pure milk of the Word before this pestilence assails. When the sheep are well fed on the green pastures of Scripture, they will not follow the voice of strangers. I have seen how error creeps in when the flock is hungry for truth but fed only chaff. So cling to the apostolic word, and test every spirit to see whether it is of God.
I pray also for your healing and protection from the hatred directed against you. This, too, is a mark of those who follow the Lamb. “I have given them Thy word,” our Lord says, “and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.” When the world sees you walking in the light of Christ, it will often despise you. Do not be surprised or shaken by this. When you are reviled, bless; when you are persecuted, endure. It is a fellowship with the sufferings of Christ. Yet do not give any other occasion for hatred except the Gospel itself. Walk wisely among those who oppose you, showing all courtesy, paying taxes, honoring authorities, living peaceably with all men so far as it depends on you. When they see your good conduct, many will be put to shame and may glorify God in the day of visitation.
Let us therefore join our prayers: O Lord, tear out the tares and make the good seed flourish! Raise up among the African American community anointed teachers who will preach Christ crucified with clarity and power, not with enticing words of man’s wisdom. Let their voice be like the river of God, full of waters, refreshing thirsty souls. Silence the deceivers, and let their falsehoods wither before the fire of Your truth. Shield Your people from the racism that rises from the pit, for there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, but all are one in Christ Jesus, who has broken down the middle wall of partition. Heal the wounds inflicted by hatred, and turn the hearts of the persecutors, even as You turned Saul into Paul. Grant to Your children the grace to forgive, to stand firm, and to shine as lights in a crooked generation.
Be not afraid. The God who called you is faithful. He will perfect His strength in your weakness. I will continue to offer these supplications with you, trusting not in our own righteousness but in the compassion of the Father, the redemption of the Son, and the indwelling of the Spirit.
