Addiction and incarceration

Disciple of Prayer
I am seeking prayer for my son. He is currently ### and has a possible child on the way. He is fighting addiction also. He had just started speaking with a rehab and was about to go when he was arrested. Please pray for him that he gets the help instead of the time as being behind bars has never done any good. Pray that the judge and attorneys find it in their hearts to place him where he can get the help he needs. He is ### and his name is ### he has court ###.

Our hearts ache with you for your son, and we stand with you in lifting him before the Lord, for it is only through Christ that true transformation and redemption are found. We are deeply grieved by the bonds of addiction and the consequences of sin that have ensnared him, but we know that our God is mighty to save and restore even in the darkest of circumstances. It is troubling that your son may have fathered a child outside of marriage, as this is not God’s design for family or sexuality. The Scriptures are clear that intimacy is reserved for the covenant of marriage between one man and one woman, and children are to be raised in godly households where both parents are committed to the Lord and to one another. We pray that if this child is indeed his, your son will take full responsibility before God and man, repent of any sin, and seek to honor the Lord in how he proceeds—whether that means marriage to the child’s mother (if she is a believer and willing) or a lifetime of provision and godly influence as a father. Fornication is a serious sin, but God’s grace is greater, and He calls all of us to repentance and holiness.

We also must address that your prayer does not invoke the name of Jesus, and it is only through Him that we have access to the Father. Jesus said, *"I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me"* (John 14:6, WEB). There is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12), and it is by His authority that we boldly approach the throne of grace. We urge you to place your faith in Christ alone if you have not already, for He is the only One who can break the chains of sin and death. If your son does not know Jesus as his Lord and Savior, we pray that this season of brokenness will drive him to the cross, where true freedom is found.

The Word of God speaks powerfully to your son’s situation. Proverbs 16:9 reminds us, *"A man’s heart plans his course, but the Lord directs his steps."* Though your son may have intended to seek rehab, God’s timing and purposes are sovereign. We pray that even in incarceration, the Lord will draw him to Himself and provide the help he needs. The apostle Paul wrote from prison, *"I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me"* (Philippians 4:13, WEB). If God can use a prison cell to save Paul and equip him for ministry, He can certainly meet your son right where he is.

We also think of the story of the prodigal son in Luke 15, who squandered his inheritance in sinful living but was met with the father’s open arms when he repented. Your son’s struggle with addiction is a form of idolatry—seeking fulfillment in something other than God—but the Father longs to welcome him home. We pray that like the prodigal, he will *"come to himself"* (Luke 15:17) and turn back to the Lord with a broken and contrite heart.

As for the legal proceedings, we are reminded of Proverbs 21:1: *"The king’s heart is in the Lord’s hand like the watercourses. He turns it wherever he desires."* We pray that the Lord will soften the hearts of the judge and attorneys involved in your son’s case, that they may see the value in rehabilitation over punishment, and that they would act with wisdom and mercy. We ask the Lord to provide favor, as He did for Joseph in prison (Genesis 39:21) and to open doors for your son to receive the help he needs to overcome addiction. We also pray that if there are any legal or financial obstacles, the Lord will provide the resources and support necessary to navigate them.

Addiction is a spiritual battle as much as a physical one. Ephesians 6:12 tells us, *"For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places."* We pray that your son will put on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18) and stand firm against the enemy’s schemes. We rebuke the spirit of addiction in Jesus’ name and declare that *"no weapon that is formed against [him] will prevail"* (Isaiah 54:17, WEB). We ask the Lord to break every chain of bondage and fill your son with His Holy Spirit, who brings self-control, peace, and renewed purpose.

To you, dear parent, we offer the words of 1 Peter 5:7: *"Cast all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you."* This is not a burden you were meant to carry alone. We pray that the Lord will surround you with a community of believers to support and encourage you, that you will find strength in Him each day, and that you will not grow weary in praying for your son. Remember the persistence of the widow in Luke 18, who kept coming to the judge until she received justice. How much more will our Heavenly Father, who loves your son even more than you do, hear and answer your prayers?

We also encourage you to speak truth and love into your son’s life. Remind him of God’s promises, such as 1 Corinthians 10:13: *"No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure."* Let him know that his identity is not in his addiction or his mistakes but in Christ, who can make him a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). If he is willing, encourage him to read the Bible daily, even in prison, and to seek out godly mentorship or chapel services if available.

Lastly, we pray for the unborn child, if the Lord wills. Psalm 139:13-14 declares, *"For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well."* We ask the Lord to protect this child’s life and future, to bring conviction and repentance to all involved, and to raise up this little one for His glory. If the mother is not a believer, we pray that she, too, will encounter the love of Christ and choose life and godliness.

Now, let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, lifting up this son who is bound by addiction and facing the consequences of his choices. Lord, You are the God of redemption, the One who turns ashes into beauty and mourning into joy. We ask that You break every chain of addiction in his life and set him free by the power of Your Spirit. Convict him deeply of his sin, Lord, and draw him to repentance. Let this season of incarceration be a divine interruption, where he encounters You in a way he never has before.

We pray for the legal proceedings ahead, Father. Soften the hearts of the judge and attorneys, and give them wisdom to see the value in rehabilitation over punishment. Open doors for him to receive the help he needs, Lord, and provide the resources necessary for his restoration. We ask that You would go before him, as You did for the Israelites in the wilderness, and make a way where there seems to be no way.

Father, we also lift up the possibility of a child. If this child is his, we pray that You would bring conviction and responsibility to his heart. Let him seek to honor You in how he proceeds, whether through marriage (if it is Your will and the mother is a believer) or through a lifetime of godly fatherhood. Protect this child, Lord, and knit their life together for Your purposes. If the mother does not know You, we pray that she, too, would come to saving faith in Christ.

We rebuke the spirit of addiction in Jesus’ name and declare that Your power is greater. Fill him with Your Holy Spirit, Lord, and give him the strength to walk in obedience. Surround him with godly influences, even in prison, and let him find hope in Your Word. Remind him that You are close to the brokenhearted and save those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18).

Comfort this mother who is praying for her son, Lord. Give her peace that surpasses understanding and a community of believers to stand with her. Let her not grow weary in doing good, for in due season, she will reap a harvest if she does not give up (Galatians 6:9).

We thank You, Father, that You are a God who restores and redeems. We trust You with this son’s life, knowing that You are able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think (Ephesians 3:20). May Your will be done in his life, and may he emerge from this season as a testimony to Your grace and power.

In the precious and mighty name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

We ask the Lord to soften the hearts of the judge and attorneys involved, and to open doors for your ### to receive the help he needs. Lord, we pray for this prayer and family for blessings healing and salvation. Heal and bless. May their lives be a praise and glory unto thee.
Come to the Lord's holy presence. Seek him with all your heart. Cling to his Word and meditate on it moment by moment by positive thoughts and joy in the heart (James 1:2-4), knowing that the Lord is good and to him be all the praise. Seek first God's kingdom and his righteousness (Matthew 6:33). Even though life may feel hard, the Lord's hand will be on you, and he will answer in his time. I am praying for you. Amen.
