The very fact that your prayer ascends against the secret enticement of the heart proves the Spirit’s work within you, yet never imagine that a prayer for purity grants you liberty to walk the edges of the pit. The heart is the vital place, the center of all sensation, and a very small prick there is deadly. When lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin, and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. That is the pedigree of sin, it is born of lust, and it brings forth dust. A man who carries gunpowder about with him may well ask that he not be led where the sparks are flying. If you have a heart like a bombshell, ready to explode at any moment, you may well pray God to keep you from the fire, lest your heart destroy you.

But know this: no man ever truly cried for a new heart until he had received one, for the cry itself proves the new heart is already there. The Saviour gives the heart of flesh and takes away the stony heart. Your pain over your vulnerability is no small thing; a broken heart is utterly incurable by human skill, but the bleeding heart brought to the bleeding heart of Jesus will stanch its wound. Do not merely lament the divided heart, for a pure and holy God hates both the sin and the lies with which we endeavor to cover it. The divided heart is cut in twain, and so long as it is divided, all is ill. The Lord’s surgery must go farther still, the sword of the Spirit must prick you in the heart, not merely cut you to the heart. The pricking in the heart is very painful, but it is the saving impression.

Pray, “Lead us not into temptation,” with all the fervency of a man who knows his own frailty. But mark this, never go into temptation. The man who prays “Lead us not into temptation,” and then goes into it, is a liar before God. A man may be tempted to run from the service of God, but if he hates the temptation, there is no sin in it to him. Yet the worst temptation I know for a young Christian is to live with a hypocrite, a man so sanctimonious and demure that the young heart, deceived by appearances, fully trusts him while the wretch is false at heart and rotten in life. Be not misled; charity and purity are the two great garments of Christianity, and we dare not rend one to preserve the other.

The heart perfumed with the love of God sheds a sweet fragrance always recognized by the inner man. When that love is shed abroad in your heart by the Holy Spirit, you laugh at impossibilities. Seek not merely to guard your eyes, but cry for the promised new spirit placed within. A stony heart may be turned to flesh, but a divided heart remains faulty. Let the Healer who binds up the broken-hearted do His work, and remember, Jesus was tempted as you are, yet without sin. He knows the ferocity and subtlety of Satan’s assaults, and He gives the watchful heart. Rest not in your own resolve, but in His finished work, and let your heart be united to fear His name.

You have prayed rightly, acknowledging that the heart is easily enticed and that sin begins long before any outward act. Job understood this: he did not boast merely of clean hands, but examined the secret movements of his soul, saying, “If my heart has been enticed by a woman, or if I have lurked at my neighbor’s door.” He knew that God’s judgment reaches to the inner chamber of our thoughts. So must you be vigilant, for the devil is cunning; he often attacks with what seems trivial first, and only later sets before you the stronger temptations. If you do not guard the heart, lurking at the door of desire, you will soon be pulled inside.

Yet do not think that purity is gained by outward washings or by the mere recitation of prayers while the mind wanders. That was the error of the Jews, who made much of cleansing the body, but neglected the corruption within. It is not the filth of the body that offends God, but the impurity of the soul. What gain is there if you present yourself in church with uplifted hands, yet carry in your heart the stains of lustful gazing or covetous desire? The bath cannot scrub away sin; only a contrite and changed heart can. Cry out with the psalmist, “Create in me a clean heart, O God,” and understand that God looks upon the meek and quiet spirit that trembles at His word.

But take courage: God is faithful, and He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able to bear. With every enticement He provides a way to escape, so that you may endure it. When the eyes begin to stray or the imagination kindles, that is the moment to flee, to turn your thoughts to Christ, to remember that you were created anew in righteousness and holiness of truth at your baptism. That new creation is not a figure, but a reality; you are called to live as an example of the believers in purity, in word, in conversation. Entertaining a lustful thought is not a small thing, it is to have communion with demons, just as surely as partaking of the Lord’s Table is communion with His Body and Blood. How can you drink from the cup of salvation while your heart lingers at the door of sin?

Therefore, do not only pray, but act. Set a guard over your eyes; avoid idleness and the occasions that inflame desire. Fill your mind with holy things, the words of Scripture, the remembrance of judgment, the beauty of the life to come. The things of this world are small and fleeting; the pleasures of a moment lead to lasting shame. Let the fear of that day of reckoning sober you, and let the gentleness of God’s grace draw you to repentance. A pure heart is His gift, but it is given to those who earnestly seek it, who hate even the approach of sin, and who rely wholly on the strength He supplies. Continue your prayer, but let it be joined with a steadfast will, and you will find Him faithful.

The same Spirit who raised Christ from the dead can bring every thought captive. When the enemy came to Jesus in the wilderness, every assault was met with the truth of Scripture, the word hidden within His heart. That is where the strength lies: letting the Word dwell in you richly, so that when enticement comes, the Spirit brings to mind the very promises and warnings that cut through the lie.

Let no one tell you the desire for purity is about mere rule-keeping. True purity flows from a heart that is in harmony with the heart of the Father. He is not standing far off, waiting for you to fail. He rejoices over every step of repentance, every honest turning away from what defiles. When your own heart condemns you, remember that He is greater than your heart, and He knows all things. He sees the genuine will of your spirit, even when your flesh stumbles. That does not excuse sin, but it means He welcomes you again and again to the throne of grace, where mercy and strength are poured out.

Keep that prayer alive. Ask Him daily to unite your heart, that there would be no divided loyalty. When you sense the first stirring of a thought that does not honor Him, do not entertain it. The moment lust is conceived, it gives birth to sin. Instead, turn swiftly, speak His Word aloud if need be, and ask the Spirit to fill what feels empty. The life you long for, the life marked by faithfulness and joy, is not built by mere resolve. It is the fruit of abiding in Christ. He is the true vine, and you will bear much fruit as you rest in Him.

Hold fast. The testing itself is not a sign of His displeasure; it is the very thing He uses to show you what is in your heart, and then to form in you a steadfastness that will not be shaken. You are not facing anything uncommon. And He who began a good work in you will complete it.
