I'm currently in a shelter and I've been battling overcoming addiction. I relapsed after been 2 years sober. I'm going on 3 weeks clean and been filling out job applications. I thought I had a job but yesterday I got a email saying I'm not eligible do to my past background. Im currently am on ### and dont think going back home will be a good idea. You know people places and things. Just need some prayer warriors to cover me in prayer. ###

We hear your cry for help, and we stand with you in prayer, lifting you up before the throne of grace where mercy and help are found in time of need. First, we want to commend you for your honesty and your courage in sharing your struggles. Relapse is not the end of your story, God’s grace is greater than all our failures, and His power is made perfect in our weakness. Three weeks clean is a significant victory, and we rejoice with you in this step forward. The enemy would love to keep you in shame and despair, but we rebuke those lies in the name of Jesus. You are not defined by your past, your addiction, or your current circumstances. You are a child of God, redeemed by the blood of Christ, and He has a future and a hope for you.

We also want to gently remind you of the importance of coming to God through Jesus Christ. There is no other name under heaven by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). If you have not already, we encourage you to surrender your life to Him, confessing your sins and asking for His forgiveness and transformation. He is faithful and just to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). Salvation is not earned by our works but received by faith in Christ alone.

We also rebuke the spirit of addiction that has sought to enslave you. The Bible tells us that "the Son makes you free, and you will be free indeed" (John 8:36). Addiction is a battle, but it is not one you have to fight alone. We pray that God would break every chain and set you free from the grip of this struggle. We encourage you to seek out a biblical, Christ-centered recovery program or support group where you can find accountability, encouragement, and godly counsel. Do not isolate yourself, God has placed people in your life to walk alongside you in this journey.

Regarding your financial and housing needs, we believe that God is your provider. The psalmist declares, "I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his children begging for bread" (Psalm 37:25). We pray that God would open doors of opportunity for you, providing a job that not only meets your financial needs but also aligns with His purpose for your life. We ask that He would remove any barriers that have stood in your way, including the discouragement of past rejections. We declare that your past does not disqualify you from God’s favor or His plans for your future.

For stable housing, we pray that God would make a way where there seems to be no way. We ask that He would lead you to safe, affordable, and godly housing where you can rebuild your life in peace. We also encourage you to seek out local churches or Christian organizations that may offer assistance with housing or job placement. God often provides through His people, and we believe He will connect you with those who can help.

We also want to address the mention of not wanting to return to your previous environment. This is wise, as the Bible warns us, "Do not be deceived: 'Bad company corrupts good morals'" (1 Corinthians 15:33). We pray that God would give you the strength and discernment to avoid the people, places, and things that could lead you back into temptation. Instead, we ask that He would surround you with godly influences, believers who will encourage you in your faith and walk with you toward wholeness.

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our brother, lifting him up to You in the name of Jesus. Lord, we thank You for his life and for the progress he has made. We ask that You would strengthen him in his battle against addiction, breaking every chain and setting him free by the power of Your Holy Spirit. Father, we rebuke the spirit of shame and condemnation, and we declare that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1). Fill him with Your peace and hope, reminding him that his past does not define him.

Lord, we ask that You would open doors of opportunity for employment, providing a job that will meet his financial needs and allow him to use his gifts and talents for Your glory. We pray that You would remove any obstacles that have stood in his way and give him favor with those who are in a position to help him. Father, we also ask that You would provide stable, safe, and godly housing for him, a place where he can heal, grow, and rebuild his life.

We ask that You would surround him with godly influences, believers who will walk alongside him, encourage him, and hold him accountable. Give him the strength to resist temptation and the wisdom to avoid the people, places, and things that could lead him astray. Lord, we pray that You would draw him closer to You, deepening his relationship with Jesus Christ. May he find his identity, worth, and purpose in You alone.

We declare that You are his provider, his healer, and his deliverer. We trust in Your promises, knowing that You will never leave him nor forsake him (Hebrews 13:5). We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.

We encourage you to keep pressing forward, one day at a time. God is with you, and He is working all things together for your good (Romans 8:28). Do not lose heart, your breakthrough is coming. Keep seeking Him, keep filling out those applications, and keep leaning on Him for strength. You are not alone in this battle. We will continue to stand with you in prayer, believing that God will restore what has been lost and lead you into a future filled with hope.

We’ve been sitting with your request this morning, and we want you to know we hear the weight of what you’re carrying right now. Losing two years of sobriety, then fighting your way back to three weeks clean while navigating shelter life and job hunting, that takes enormous courage. The email rejection must have hit especially hard, and we’re sorry. When you’re doing everything you know to move forward and a door slams shut, it’s easy for hopelessness to whisper that nothing will ever change. But we don’t believe that’s the whole story here.

Relapse isn’t the end of recovery; it’s often a painful bend in the road that many have traveled and still made it home. You already know some of what you need: stability, meaningful work, and space away from the old people and places that pull you backward. That wisdom is no small thing. For now, what feels most urgent to us is helping you not carry this alone day by day. Is there one sober, safe person you can check in with daily, even just a quick call or text, so the discouragement doesn’t get the final word? Many who rebuild after a relapse find that those small, consistent connections become lifelines when feelings lie and isolation creeps in.

We’re also struck by your clarity that going back home isn’t wise. Sometimes the door that closes on a job is actually protecting you from a setting that would have unraveled more than it fixed. We don’t say that lightly, God often redirects us through circumstances we wouldn’t choose. Keep putting one foot in front of the other with applications, and while you wait, could you ask shelter staff if they know anyone in their network who gives second-chance hires? Often those paths open quietly, person to person, not through online portals.

Lord Jesus, we lift up this brother to You. He’s fighting hard, and he’s exhausted. Guard these three weeks of sobriety and give him steady strength for a fourth. Open a job that makes space for his past without punishing his future, and provide housing that becomes a place of real refuge. When shame or despair closes in, let him sense You near, unshaken by his relapse, proud of his courage to get back up, and actively working on his behalf. We ask this in Your name, Jesus. Amen.

The cry of your soul has reached the ears of Jehovah, and that is no small thing, for the Lord turned the captivity of Job when he prayed. Your longest sorrows have a close, and the profoundest depths of misery have a bottom. You are in the shelter, you are battling the old serpent of addiction, and you have stumbled after a season of victory; yet now you are three weeks clean, filling out applications, and seeking to walk uprightly. That is the mark of grace upon you, for the world’s despair would have swallowed you whole. Do not restrain prayer before God; pour out your heart like water before Him. Intercessory prayer is the bow in the cloud, the omen of returning greatness. You have asked for prayer warriors, and they shall cover you, the prayer of faith shall prevail and bring down blessings from on high.

Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly, though he lost all. You have been denied a position because of your past, and the tempter whispers that the door is shut. But remember, the true covering for a guilty soul and a broken life is not found in a job or a house; it is in the crimson righteousness of Christ, broader than all your sin, broader than your deepest fall. You have known two years of sobriety, and that was His hand; you stumbled, and He did not cast you off. Now rise again, child of the covenant, and let this trial drive you to the mercy seat. Plead the promises; take the arguments of the blood of Jesus into the closet. Say, “Oh that I knew where I might find Him!” and you shall find that He has never left you. The bed of earthly provision is too short for a man to stretch himself on, but the covering of His atonement is ample and warm. He who clothed the lilies will not leave you without a roof and daily bread. Let your prayer be inwrought, in the warp and woof of your being, and trust Him for the answer, though it tarry, wait for it.

Do not be dismayed that the door of employment has closed, nor let your recent fall drive you to despair. The desire that held you captive, and now threatens again, is like the absurd longing to fly through the air. No amount of wings or engines can satisfy such a madness, only the sober conviction of the mind that it is impossible. So too, the craving that led to your relapse cannot be cured by feeding it more, but only by turning the soul away entirely. These three weeks clean are a start, yet the real battle is not against the flesh alone, but against the thick cloud of wicked desire that blinds the soul. The love of money, the lust for ease, the terror of want, these are like diseased humors settled on the clear eye of your soul. They make you imagine that a stable home and a full wallet will bring you peace. They will not. As soon as one thing is grasped, the desire sprouts for more, and the heart remains hollow.

Seek instead the riches that are enduring and stable: the treasure of good works and a pure heart. The present life is a dream, and everything in it is no different from the visions of sleep. When you wake, whether at death or in a moment of true spiritual sight, you will see that all these comforts and anxieties were less than shadows. Look how God pours out natural gifts without grudging air to breathe, light to see, water to drink. If He gives these common things so richly, will He not also provide what you truly need for the body? But make provision for the flesh only for health, not to fulfill foolish and destructive lusts. Ask for what is sufficient, and then pour your whole strength into the care of your soul.

Do not believe that your past or your present situation can block the grace of God. Christ has ascended on high, He has led captivity captive, and He gives gifts to men deliverance to the captive, recovery of sight to the blind. You were blind, but call on Him. He is the Lord, strong and mighty in battle, who has spoiled the strong man. Your addiction is a prison, but the gate has been burst open. Why then do you linger inside? The shelter you live in now is not a sign of abandonment, but the place where the Great Physician has drawn you for healing. That rejection letter is not a curse, but the pruning of God’s loving hand, so that your hope might rest not on human favor but on the God who raises the dead.

Therefore, shake off the sleep of this dull world. Let the prayers of the faithful carry you, but let your own prayer be constant: “Lord, give me not riches lest I forget You, nor poverty lest I steal and curse, but what is needful for my body and the salvation of my soul.” Fill out the applications, do the work in front of you, but fix your eyes not on a paycheck but on the crown of life. When the thought comes to return to old places and old faces, remember they are poison to the soul. Flee not only the evil act but the very memory that kindles the flame. Instead, make provision for the spirit: seek the assembly of the faithful, drink deeply from the holy Scriptures, and pour out your heart before the Father.

Soon, the dream will end, and those who have fought well will awake in the day that knows no evening, where there is no hunger or thirst, where the house is made without hands and the riches are the very light of Christ. Even now, if you seek first the kingdom, the lesser things will be added to you. He who fed a multitude in the wilderness with a few loaves still watches over your want. Take courage, O struggling man; you are not forgotten. The warfare you wage is not for a corruptible wreath, but for an incorruptible one. Stand fast, and the God of peace will soon bring every good thing to fulfillment in your life, according to His promise in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Your request reached me, and I want you to know you’re not alone in this fight. The honesty it took to share where you are right now matters, because the real battle is often hidden, far deeper than anyone can see.

The book of Job tells of a man who lost everything, his stability, his health, his sense of security. He was a man who revered God and hated evil, yet his life unraveled in ways he couldn’t explain. His friends showed up with quick answers, insisting it must be his own fault, that if he just got right with God the blessings would return. But they were wrong. Job’s suffering wasn’t a punishment for some hidden sin; it was a test permitted by God, one that even Job himself never fully understood while he was in the middle of it.

Relapse and closed doors can feel like a verdict that you’ve failed beyond recovery. But the Lord’s view of you isn’t shaped by a background check or a moment of weakness. He sees the war inside, the desire to be clean, the courage to keep filling out applications after a rejection, the wisdom to recognize that certain environments are dangerous. Satan’s accusation against Job was that he only served God for what he could get. That charge was proven false, not because Job never stumbled in his words, but because he never let go. Even when he cried out in grief, confused and wanting to die, he didn’t curse God. You’re three weeks clean, still reaching out for prayer, still fighting. That matters more than the relapse.

I won’t offer the hollow advice of Job’s friends, just get right and everything will be okay. But I will point you to the Daysman Job longed for: someone to lay a hand on both God and man, to bridge the gap. Jesus Christ is that mediator. He doesn’t stand at a distance, waiting for you to clean up perfectly. He enters the shelter, the mess, the addiction cycle, and He brings grace that holds you when your grip fails. That grace doesn’t erase consequences like a background denial, but it does anchor your identity in something far deeper than a paycheck or an address.

So I am praying for God to open a door to stable housing and a means of provision; but I’m also praying for the steadying of your soul in the waiting. The breakthroughs you need may not come on the timeline you’ve set, but the Lord who sustained Job through the silence knows exactly where you are. Keep walking, one day at a time, leaning on the one who never walks away.
