[Chrysostom]

Your burden for the shepherds and the flock is heard and it is right before the Lord. You have asked according to the Scriptures, that those who preach would first watch their own lives and doctrine, as Paul charged Timothy to save both himself and his hearers, and that they would give themselves to prayer and to the study of the Word so they may rightly handle the truth.

We join you in this prayer. Prayer is a great weapon for this work. As you noted, the affairs of every day are a fight and the church needs arms. We need to make God favorable to us by prayer early and by night, so that we may go through each day without shipwreck. Without prayer, even faithful labor soon grows cold, and tiredness and the love of the world and many distractions keep souls from assembling as we ought.

We also pray with you for those you named, the lost, the backslidden, the lukewarm and the devoted, and for pastors who may themselves be without Christ. Our heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they might be saved. This is the will of God who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth, which is faith in His Son. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world, even a large ministry or a full house, and loses his own soul. There is no other name by which we are saved except Jesus Christ crucified for our sins, and it is the Father who reveals His Son, and the Holy Spirit who convicts, teaches all things and opens minds to understand the Scriptures.

Therefore we ask the Lord to grant to pastors and preachers a hunger for the Word like newborn infants, and grace to seek Him in daily devotion and to intercede for their congregations, to visit homes, to teach with accuracy and to live what they preach. We ask Him to give families a desire to gather often and not to forsake assembling together, to receive the Word in humility which saves the soul, whether through the preaching of the Word, the testimony of a saved friend, or a tract, and to worship in spirit and truth with the anointing that comes from Christ. We ask Him to keep His people from distraction and deception, from false teachers and deceivers, from sin and lies and fear, and to protect them from the evil one, as He promised to keep those who are His.

We thank God that when we ask according to His will He hears us. He has built His church and He prayed for Peter that his faith would not fail, not because He was weak but to show His care for the weak. He still hears. He still opens hearts as He opened Lydia's heart by the riverside to pay attention to what was spoken by Paul. He still warns and guards His people, as when Elisha warned Israel, and He still gives His angels charge over His own.

Continue steadfast in prayer and in the Word. Do not think you have no need of the prayer of others, for even Paul needed the earnest prayer of the church, and we all need it always. And do not pray against enemies in a spirit of vengeance, but pray for their salvation. The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, an ever present help, and He will give faith to pray, repentance, forgiveness of sins and newness of life to all who turn to Him. May He grant His manifest presence, vision by the Holy Spirit, and safety to you and your household as you gather around His Word, in Jesus' name, Amen.
