Proverbs, Chapter 2

2:1 My son, if you will receive my words, And lay up my commandments with you;

2:2 So as to incline your ear to wisdom, And apply your heart to understanding;

2:3 Yes, if you cry after discernment, And lift up your voice for understanding;

2:4 If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures:

2:5 Then you will understand the fear of Yahweh, And find knowledge of God.

2:6 For Yahweh gives wisdom; Out of his mouth [comes] knowledge and understanding:

2:7 He lays up sound wisdom for the upright; [He is] a shield to those who walk in integrity;

2:8 That he may guard the paths of justice, And preserve the way of his saints.

2:9 Then you will understand righteousness and justice, And equity, [yes,] every good path.

2:10 For wisdom will enter into your heart, And knowledge will be pleasant to your soul;

2:11 Discretion will watch over you; Understanding will keep you:

2:12 To deliver you from the way of evil, From the men who speak perverse things;

2:13 Who forsake the paths of uprightness, To walk in the ways of darkness;

2:14 Who rejoice to do evil, And delight in the perverseness of evil;

2:15 Who are crooked in their ways, And wayward in their paths:

2:16 To deliver you from the strange woman, Even from the foreigner who flatters with her words;

2:17 Who forsakes the best friend of her youth, And forgets the covenant of her God:

2:18 For her house inclines to death, And her paths to the spirits of the dead;

2:19 None who go to her return again, Neither do they attain to the paths of life:

2:20 That you may walk in the way of good men, And keep the paths of the righteous.

2:21 For the upright will stay in the land, And the perfect will be left in it.

2:22 But the wicked will be cut off from the land, And betrayers will be rooted out of it.

Verse 1 – 5 of Proverbs 2, advises that persistence in hearing and praying for instruction must be used to secure the great principle of godliness, the fear of God. Verse 1 tells us to lay His commandments up in storage. In verse 2, we are instructed to listen attentively and reflect sincerely. We are to apply our hearts to the correct perception of the truth. In such a case, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding. Verse 4 reflects upon the need for us to be earnest in pray and effort. Verse 5 states that if all these previous conditions are met, then you will intelligently perceive the Lord and obtain the knowledge of God. In verse 7, God is ready to give wisdom by revelation from Him. He provides every ready substance, instead of fiction. He is the provider of safety and wisdom, to those who acquire His wisdom. God defends the right way, and those in it. He guides and guards the objects of his favor. In such a case, you shall understand all parts of duty to God and man.

You will achieve this understanding when you see what is right, just and fair. You will see every good path. This will take place when we turn our ears to wisdom and our hearts to understanding. We will be delivered from the grave dangers of an evil man, from the man who speaks of perversity and that is opposed to the truth. Verse 13 speaks of leaving the paths of uprightness, or plainness, to habitually act in the way of the evil. There are those who find great pleasure in the pursuit of evil and are in all ignorance of good. Not only pleasure in their perversity, but delights in that of others. They love the wickedest of deeds. Their ways are tortuous, unprincipled and thy are literally going backward, not only to the right of the path of righteousness, but in the complete opposite direction.

Verse 16-19 deal with deliverance from another danger. The strange woman is often a term used for a harlot, or promiscuous woman. Strange because she is opposite of what is right or proper. She flatters with her words. Not a word from her can be trusted and her heart is filled with destruction. Her tongue speaks deceit. She forsakes her lawful husband and forgets the marriage made in the name of God. Her house sinks down unto death and her paths are shades of the departed. Those that go to her remain unremorseful and defiant, and they do not take hold of the paths of life. Instead, in the last three verse, we may instead walk in the path of good men and take heed to these warnings to keep with the paths of the righteous. The impious rebels and wicked of the earth shall be destroyed and cut off. They shall be rooted from the earth.

In summary, we are invited to seek wisdom, because it teaches those principles by which we may obtain God's guidance. It also teaches us the ways to avoid the society and influence of the wicked, whose evil courses are described.

It seems to be ironic that these words came from the very same person that ended up getting the boot from the Israelite nation. In actuality I would attribute this chapter to Jedidiah instead of King Solomon. Solomon was the scoundrel that will be realized as the one that brought down the nation of God. King Solomon didn't obey the Laws for the Kings of Israel (Deuteronomy 17:14-20 & 29:20).

King Solomon is not an extremely righteous man. We pray we are in tuned to this and learn to denounce all evilities. Amen!
